Course Description

In the third edition of Solar Energy, you will learn to design a complete photovoltaic system. This course introduces the technology that converts solar energy into electricity, heat and solar fuels with a main focus on electricity generation. Photovoltaic (PV) devices are presented as advanced semiconductor devices that deliver electricity directly from sunlight. The emphasis is on understanding the working principle of a solar cell, fabrication of solar cells, PV module construction and the design of a PV system. You will gain a greater understanding of the principles of the photovoltaic conversion— the conversion of light into electricity. This course explores the advantages, limitations and challenges of different solar cell technologies, such as crystalline silicon solar cell technology, thin film solar cell technologies and the latest novel solar cell concepts as studied on lab-scale. We will discuss the specification...

We will discuss the specifications of solar modules and demonstrate how to design a complete solar system for any particular application.

Education Method

The class will consist of a collection of eight to twelve minute lecture videos, exercises, assignments and exams. Specified assignments and the three exams will determine the final grade. The new textbook on “Solar Energy, basics, technology and systems” from the Delft University of Technology will be available for the students on-line and free of charge. Your course staff will encourage and challenge you to learn from, and interact with, your fellow students by helping each other and sharing ideas and best practices, in the course forum. We were happy to see the incredible number of interesting student videos on solar energy systems from all over the world in the previous edition of this course.

Professor Smets was the first ever recipient of the edX Prize for Exceptional Contributions to Online Teaching and Learning. His previous online courses attracted over 150,000 students worldwide, who were inspired to take their first steps in the transition to renewable energy.

This course will serve big knowledge on requirements of nowadays because solar energy is a great developing area. I found this course very helpful in increasing my knowledge in this field because I am an electrical engineering student so this really matters to me. This course ware will give you the deepest knowledge in this field that you will be able to make your own solar PV systems. I have successfully completed this course with verified certificate and i am proud of it. But one thing is to be kept in mind that you should have good power over physics and mathematics otherwise this course will be tough for you.

Rajnikant Borkar (INDIA) As student of material science, this course will give us an opportunity to learn the practical aspects and challenges of solar voltaic technology. During our lab work, we don't come across the designing part of this work, therefore this course provide us an insight platform to understand and learn this technology from household to mass application.

I watched the video and I'm looking forward to starting the course. I wish the one who made negative comments about the language skills of the lecturer to be as fluent as him in any other language! My mother tongue is French, so my English isn't perfect either. But I can speak Dutch, German, and Thai too...

I am from India and an architect.Today's grid power costs are going up each day and as we receive plenty of sunshine, solar energy will really serve a great deal to our society. I think this course will be very useful to understand the technology and then use my experience in design to create something which can be affordable, user-friendly and economical for everyone, maybe even free, who knows. Really looking forward to this course. All the best!

My enthusiasm is that the cost of SPV has costly due to manufacturing of SPV through Silicon. why the scientist and the other are not doing research on making SPV through Organic materials where cost will reduce exponentially. please do consider my view.

This is no really a review. I am currently undertaking Delft's Next Generation Infrastructures. There will be a second part of the course in September run at the samt time as the Solar one. I will have to choose one over the other. It would have been better to start the Solar course after the end of the infrastructures or vice versa.

This is an excellent course. It was the second course i joined in after Electromagnetism by Walter Lewwin in edX. And i really studied many things from the course and Dr. Arno about solar energy technology which subject i concerned very much.

Truly an awesome course. Especially, Dr. Arno is really knowledgeable. Though, I was already planning to further my studies but not sure about my field but after attending this course I felt much more motivated to pursue PV.

I had little prior experience with the subject. The warning that some experience in physic and math was a requirement was a major understatement from my perspective. I attempted to do remedial work but it became too much along with a major unexpected project occurring at my place of work which spilled over into my personal time.

The first half of the course is a grand sweep of Semiconductor Physics so that you can understand the physical processes of the PV cell. The second half focuses on some basic economics of current systems, and the component- interplay of functioning power systems. Having a BSc in Chemistry, the attempt at introducing molecular orbitals in crystalline solids and bits of statistical thermo was a refreshing look back, however, for folks without the full perspective, I think it would be conceptually challenging. It's a great course for someone in their Jr or Sr year of engineering/science undergrad or a grad. For anyone without the physics background, the theoretical part will probably be a huge difficulty - while the second half of the course, which focuses of system design and planning/cost-estimation would be quite helpful.
