Course Description

Terrorism has gone from a persistent yet marginal security concern to one of the most important security problems of our day. There are few countries that do not suffer from some form of terrorism. Though many attempts at terrorism fail, some groups wage lengthy and bloody campaigns and, in exceptional cases, kill hundreds or even thousands in pursuit of their ends.

This course on terrorism will explore the nuances involved in defining terrorism, the nature of Al Qaeda, Hamas, the Islamic State, and other important groups, the effectiveness of different counterterrorism tools, terrorist recruiting, counterterrorism and the rule of law, the political context in South Asia and the Middle East, and the terrorist use of technology.

For those interested in an abbreviated version of this course, the 3-section course Terrorism and Counterterrorism: An Introduction is available here.

I am a security officer ,and working in an insurgency environment Where counter terrorism initiatives on a broad level is still necessary especially on academic level .Because our training institutions are not equipped with comprehensive curricula ,so that this is very helpful for us.

Before I could start this course, as a logical sequence, I saw the prolife of my future teachers and syllabus of the course. I had a very strange observation that there was not a single Professor who is Muslim and they have something to talk about Islam in the course. Similarly, in introductory video and syllabus clearly shows that this course is designed to safeguard heinous designs of Israel and India. It will not be a surprise if I find most of the professors are Jews. I will still take this course with open mind and open heart and will not take to my heart your clear prejudices which are reflected from Introduction and syllabus of this course. At the end I will open your blind eye and deaf ears towards that part of the world which is really affected by terrorism. Meanwhile, I would suggest you to try to gather figure where more civilians are killed by terrorists and which is the country who’s more number of soldiers are killed by... I was annoyingly surprised by the fact that course material was not available for printing. Not easy to read dozens of scanned pages onto a white screen. That´s why I dropped out. Maybe next time.

I've just finished this course and earned a verified certificate. Excellent course! My only reservation has to do the bias when dealing with the Israeli-Palestinian struggle. Generally speaking,I really enjoyed taking this course! Thank you ...

Excellent course. Thorough, detailed, very interesting and complete. Loved every bit of it. Great professors as well. I've learned so much. Now I understand many topics that were covered in the course, and I see how media don't explain events that happen in the world, but just give us some info about them. Now I do know what's behind these events and what is really going on. Thank you Georgetown!

The authors of this course consider Palestinian groups as terrorists but they do not consider the state of Israel who confiscated Palestinian lands and kill its inhabitants as terrorist. This course is biased and represents the white privileged Zionist in the USA. It Doesn't worth a dime
