In the last decade, the amount of data available to organizations has reached unprecedented levels. Data is transforming business, social interactions, and the future of our society. In this course, you will learn how to use data and analytics to give an edge to your career and your life. We will examine real world examples of how analytics have been used to significantly improve a business or industry. These examples include Moneyball, eHarmony, the Framingham Heart Study, Twitter, IBM Watson, and Netflix. Through these examples and many more, we will teach you the following analytics methods: linear regression, logistic regression, trees, text analytics, clustering, visualization, and optimization. We will be using the statistical software R to build models and work with data. The contents of this course are essentially the same as those of the corresponding MIT class (The Analytics Edge). It is a challenging class, but it will enable you to apply analytics to real-world applications.

The class will consist of lecture videos, which are broken into small pieces, usually between 4 and 8 minutes each. After each lecture piece, we will ask you a “quick question” to assess your understanding of the material. There will also be a recitation, in which one of the teaching assistants will go over the methods introduced with a new example and data set. Each week will have a homework assignment that involves working in R or LibreOffice with various data sets. (R is a free statistical and computing software environment we’ll use in the course. See the Software FAQ below for more info). In the middle of the class, we will run an analytics competition, and at the end of the class there will be a final exam, which will be similar to the homework assignments.

If you only want to take one course to learn data science using R, take this one. What I really like about this course: 1. Interesting real-world cases. 2. Highly hands-on: you can work through all the problems following the guidance, and have experience participating in Kaggle competition. 3. The instruction -- very clear and easy to follow. 4. Covers key areas in data science, and opens door to future exploration.

This course is awesome. I didn't know much about analytics and R but after going through this course I can say that I learned from the very best. This is the best course if someone wants to start his journey into data analysis.

By far this is the best course I've done on edx. Teaching how to make models in R and solving optimization problems, this course provides 0 to 100 learning experience. I couldn't imagine to learn more from an online course, Now i see why MIT is No.1 worldwide, it's no coincidence.

This course is spiking my interest in data science. After doing this course I'm seriously considering data scientist as my career option. Undoubtedly the best course on ML i've come across so far. The exercises are amazing and give you a hands on experience on R. Puts forward real word problems and covers the right applications of ML in the industry today.

This is the best MOOC I have ever attended and the only one till now that I completed fully and attained certificate of completion with 91% scores. My score is just a reflection of how well it was taught and the superior content. I am taking this second time to practice all the topics again.

Excellent course! Thank you to all the team! The course is based on R and the last two weeks uses spreadsheets instead. Well chosen examples and assignments on Linear Regression, Logistic Regression, Trees and Random Forests, Visualization, Linear and Integer Optimization. I really enjoyed the course and would gladly take part 2!

Content is terrific for providing an introductory view and appreciation of what big data is about and its potential. Just the right combination ( for me) of hands-on mucking around with R and seeing what analytical approaches there are to data analysis. NEXT STEP... please provide us with a course on DEEP LEARNING.

One of the best courses I have taken on analytics. The coverage of the course material has good breadth and depth. You will learn a decent amount of R to be on your own.

I think this course is great, but I found it too challenging. For starters, the speech in the videos goes faster than I could keep up with, so to type what was needed I had to pause, rewind, etc., when the video was in a different screen. I did 3 weeks of the course and dropped out, because the material in week 3 went over my head. I had no idea when the equations meant, and the instructors were saying 'as you can see, this shows why...'. I couldn't see! I decided to drop out and then retake the course next time it is on and cover the content again, hopefully I will be able to understand more next time. Another issue is the homework. New commands are introduced during homework, which means your learning it as you're being assessed in it. I think covering less per week, having a longer course, and teaching things more comprehensively, would help. Or else increase the required previous experience. But if you have no previous experience and your math isn't great (it says high school level, I think it needs to be a little higher than that), it might be a little too challenging.

This is by far the best mooc on this subject and in general, that I have participated in. The content is well made and the examples are interesting. The exercises are well designed and require effort and thus add a lot of value. The Kaggle competition makes one more confident.

The last offering of this course, even though in Archived mode, was so good that I put this course on my wait list for 5 months. Now that it is active again, I can't wait to learn all the analytical techniques and tackle all the challenges this course offers.

It was the best online course and one of the best course in general I have participated in. Really demanding, eye opening, inspirational, up-to-date. Problems are illustrated with real world data. You will "make your hands dirty" solving many problems. The video and materials are excellently made. Many times during the course I had a moment of pure delight when I was shown how to calculate probability of something what moment ago I had thought is impossible to predict.

This is hands down one of the best courses on Data Analytics I've found: I've taken it twice and will probably take it a third time, just to go over all of the useful information and practice assignments again. Some of the advanced R packages could be better explained, but the fact that I have even a general idea of what they're doing and why already makes this course better than many others. By the end of the MOOC, you actually have the ability to compete in a Kaggle competition; no other course has given me that level of competence. Thank you!

This was the best MOOC I have taken. I had some prior experience using R, and this course expanded what I could do with R. The lessons were explained very well so that even someone without prior experience with R should have been able to follow along just fine. This course also introduced me to many analytics methods that I had been aware of but had not previously understood. I now understand these methods better and have been able to use some of them in my work.

This course is amazing. Hands on from start to finish, covers a lot of modeling techniques and also covers text modeling in a very clear way, which is a lack in many other courses. I recommend this course for anyone who wants to be better or learn machine learning using R.

This was my first Data Science course and it made me love the field. The course was mid-blowing, comprehensive. I admit that I was barely coping with the subject matter as I'm from a non-programming background. But it's reach was far.

This was the best MOOC I have ever taken, or class for that matter. The format is very practical. For many of the lectures and recitals you can be in R doing the same work in parallel. This constant re-enforcement of the material really helped me in retention.

Probably one of the best MOOCs I have done. If you are interested in data science without the complicated math this is a great course (I tried to get to grips with several other data science courses before this one and was constantly frustrated by crashing against the math.) This course takes the approach that R does the math and they teach you how to use it and what the model results mean. Each model is explained and worked through several times with different data and we had to compete in a Kaggle comp in the middle which was a real eye opener.

I recommend it. This course has far exceeded my expectations. Both teacher assistants have been very clear in his explanations. The development of the themes is bearable . There are lots of practice. Needless to say, many times the strictly scientific explanation of the use or not of a given algorithm is not given ; anyway , if you have doubts , you can consult the relevant literature . Thank you so much

The content is an excellent non-rigorous introduction to the use of machine learning techniques using R language. (There is some explanation of how the methods work, but no attempt to prove it mathematically.) It is extremely well organised and supported (helpful staff in the discussion forum). It would be feasible to use it as an introduction to R (so long as you have programming experience in another language), though the level is perfect for people with some prior knowledge of R. The course includes an optional Kaggle competition, integrated perfectly with the course. The instructors were all fine, though I personally preferred to read the lecture scripts rather than listening to them. The provider was fine.
