These examples include Moneyball, eHarmony, the Framingham Heart Study, Twitter, IBM Watson, and Netflix. Through these examples and many more, we will teach you the following analytics methods: linear regression, logistic regression, trees, text analytics, clustering, visualization, and optimization. We will be using the statistical software R to build models and work with data. The contents of this course are essentially the same as those of the corresponding MIT class (The Analytics Edge). It is a challenging class, but it will enable you to apply analytics to real-world applications.

The class will consist of lecture videos, which are broken into small pieces, usually between 4 and 8 minutes each. After each lecture piece, we will ask you a “quick question” to assess your understanding of the material. There will also be a recitation, in which one of the teaching assistants will go over the methods introduced with a new example and data set. Each week will have a homework assignment that involves working in R or LibreOffice with various data sets. (R is a free statistical and computing software environment we’ll use in the course. See the Software FAQ below for more info). In the middle of the class, we will run an analytics competition, and at the end of the class there will be a final exam, which will be similar to the homework assignments.

I have audited various courses on Data Analytics and Stats but this far exceeds any competition! I was trying to learn R through some coursera course and getting nowhere. Initially I was a little apprehensive about starting this course despite having no prior knowledge of R. However the instructors were very thorough and made R seem easy. The best part of this course is perhaps the assignments. Initially I found them repetitive and pointless but halfway through the course I realised how much the assignments had helped me broaden my approach. All I could think was new ways Data Analytics could be used to solve simple real world problems. This course completely opened my mind up to new horizons. If you keep worrying about syntax it defeats the main purpose. Syntax can be googled. Reasoning cannot! All the best!

I expected great things and I was pleased with this course. Lots of lectures and closely related exercises. Also, competition by the end of the course lets you check what you learned in a real-world situation and see how well you performed against the other students.

I completed the course and earned a Verified Certificate. Very good course. Highly recommended. The theoretical part of the course is a little lacking but it compensates for it by giving hands-on with many real world problems.

I totally loved the course, this is one of the best MOOC Courses I have taken so far, according to me the best part of the course was Kaggle Competition. I also liked the questions right after every lecture and how their answers are also considered for the final grade. I suggest everyone to take this amazing course.

Not every class on EDX is as good as the Analytics Edge. Yes it is really time-consuming to finish all the assignments but you will find it really really helpful. FYI I talked with an MIT student and he said this only course were almost the same as the one they took in school. I wonder that's one of the best things about internet: you can take MIT classes even if you have no chance to become an MIT student.

The course was well structured and the content was very interesting. The recitations, scripts and documents greatly improved my learning and helped me better understand the material. The Kaggle competition was fun and engaging. Discussion boards were also well moderated by the teaching assistants and it was very informative. The only point of improvement I would add would be to make this course self paced and available all year round.

This is the best data classes I have taken. Nothing else has tied big data to everyday examples so well. You run through Moneyball, mapping out data from Google Maps, data analytics using Twitter. This class brought data to life and is one of the best courses I have taken. The videos are high quality and run through the R code thoroughly so you won't get behind.

This is the best course on data because it is not theoretical or boring at all. Every topic is covered using real examples , data sets and case studies. Kaggle competition is also part of this course which is very good thing. I think MITx and edx should come up with more advance course as its extension on topics like Big Data, working with big data sets or more.

This is a phenomenal course. The pace, the level of depth, the structure, and the homework assignments are some of the notable aspects of this course that has made this the best offering I have ever taken, online or otherwise. The amount of care and consideration in designing this class is extremely apparent.

Disappointed with the course content. It is not a course about the Analytics Edge, it is a course about "Programming R for Data Analysis". Too much emphasis on learning a new coding language and not enough on the actual material that it is meant to cover. Requires you to download and install unsupported software.

This is the best course on analytics that I have attended online. Every topic was taught in such a manner that the tough concepts also easily understood. I would love to attend the expanded version of the topics in this course. I am really grateful to MIT Analytics Edge Team for creating such a well structured course and offering it in a MOOC.

I found this course to be an excellent introduction into the field of Analytics and Machine Learning. The quality of the course content is top notch and lectures are very clear, concise and well produced. While some of the HW assignments may seem boring, they serve a key function in getting you to be more familiar with R syntax and exploring data by repetition. The Kaggle competition is ultimately what sets this course apart from others. The problem is very well formulated, and the competition does an amazing job of reinforcing all the learnings from the course over a 3 week span. I spent tons of time on the competition and read up on far more advanced topics in the process. The competition also got me pretty fluent with R, to the point that I am comfortable tackling new problems in R for exploratory visualization and analysis. This is by no means an in-depth and rigorous course, but it touches upon a large number of different top... There are plenty of other MOOCs to jump to after completing this one as well as some great texts such as Introduction to Statistical Learning and Elements of Statistical Learning... both of which are freely available at the author's booksite. A big thanks to the course staff and TAs for making this an enjoyable course to participate in.

A well-structured and entertaining course. It provides solid foundation of different methods and thanks to the various practical applications, you can grasp the analytical techniques. I would appreciate more of the open questions like the Kaggle competition to gain profound ability to deal independently and confidently with the data.

This is a fantastic overview of Analytics and more gently than all other courses on this topic introduces you to the statistical computing application R and many of the main tools used in analytics. The staff is extremely active and supportive in the forums (as are other learned students) and you will learn a lot in the Kaggle competition. Also, the last two weeks on Optimization are fantastic! Learning how to frame the problem so that a solver can solve it is more than half the battle. Loved this course. I've taken it twice already and will likely be back again. Congrats and thank you to the Professor Bertsimas and the staff!

Incredibly useful, tremendously challenging. This course is definitely one of the best I've taken online or otherwise. The lectures are informative and very enjoyable, the homework assignments are interesting and challenging and the competition was a great, great idea. Be aware that this course requires a lot of time and effort, the 10-15 hours per week estimated effort is very close to reality even for someone with prior experience in R. If you make it to the end, the sensation of accomplishment is incredible... highly recommended!!!.

Excellent course with high-quality material. It is well organized with a great balance between theory and practice. Besides the various analytic methods with practical real-life cases, it gives a good overview of R through practical examples. It requires serious time investment to maximize the benefits you get but it does worth it. The Kaggle competition and the final wrap-up exams are also good ideas to recap and practice on the skills gained.
