In the last decade, the amount of data available to organizations has reached unprecedented levels. Data is transforming business, social interactions, and the future of our society. We will examine real world examples of how analytics have been used to significantly improve a business or industry. These examples include Moneyball, eHarmony, the Framingham Heart Study, Twitter, IBM Watson, and Netflix. Through these examples and many more, we will teach you the following analytics methods: linear regression, logistic regression, trees, text analytics, clustering, visualization, and optimization. We will be using the statistical software R to build models and work with data. The contents of this course are essentially the same as those of the corresponding MIT class (The Analytics Edge). It is a challenging class, but it will enable you to apply analytics to real-world applications.

The class will consist of lecture videos, which are broken into small pieces, usually between 4 and 8 minutes each. After each lecture piece, we will ask you a “quick question” to assess your understanding of the material. There will also be a recitation, in which one of the teaching assistants will go over the methods introduced with a new example and data set. Each week will have a homework assignment that involves working in R or LibreOffice with various data sets. (R is a free statistical and computing software environment we’ll use in the course. See the Software FAQ below for more info). In the middle of the class, we will run an analytics competition, and at the end of the class there will be a final exam, which will be similar to the homework assignments.

Excellent course for beginners like me who were not aware of even R and statistical methods prior to this course. The examples, recitation and assignments were adding value to the learning at each step... I found it really wonderful and helpful in getting me ready for more advanced courses in data analytics.

This courses use real world examples to teach several basic but important statistical models, in order to gain analytical edge. Compared with other maching learning courses, it put more emphasis on application which is quite beneficial for non-stats major students, like me. Out of around 15+ courses I have taken in coursera/edx, MIT coures are among the highest standard. It is challenging and just the challenge would give me sense of fulfillment when submitting the final exam. I highly recommend this course.

By far the best MOOC I've done, after some other experiences in Coursera, Stanford, Google and MongoDB. For me the best thing is that they explain everything you need, every step, every analytic thought ot move, and they are experts in the topics, so it's formidable.

Great course. The workload was too heavy for a full-time working person like me and the assignments seemed repetitive (you can see some critics about them) but now that I completed the course, I can say find a way to do all of them! In the final exam, I realized that I am much more confident on the topics for which I did the homeworks. For some of the topics, I didn't finish the homeworks and I struggled a lot in the final exam. And I can use R now, it is amazing. :)

Nice MOOC lecture with practice-oriented knowledge on the topic of analytics. The exercises and problem sets are based on real-world data, even if simplified, it was still very interesting to solve real problems with knowledge obtained from lecture. Programming is not so hard in this lecture and I wish to have more in-depth explanation on theories (maths) behinds those models. All in all, I love this course.

Excellent course. Well-designed. Interesting lectures and assignments. Relevant Kaggle competition. Lots of work with slightly repetitive assignments. If you follow the course properly, the material is quite easy to understand and the questions easy to answer. You'll feel empowered after this course as you'll have learned quite a bit of R. I would pair this course with the first courses of Coursera's Johns Hopkins Data Science Specialization, especially R Programming, to make the Kaggle competition more manageable.

It was a very practical and well-designed course. Every discussed concepts of machine learning field was accompanied with real world problems and solutions. Although assignments were little lengthy, it helped grounds-on understanding about the analytics. Thanks to the instructors' such a great effort!

\- my prior experience on statistics was very poor! \- I cannot compare with other MOOCs, becuase this is my first course \- I found great competence on preparation of the different cases, closed to the real life; the learning's strategy was progressive and efficient \- I suggest to plan for release tools to be kept as relevant materials after the course

One of the best taught MOOC class I have every taken. Well choreographed. No waste of time from rambling instructors. Lot of practice exams, the concepts are drilled very well. The use cases are excellent. I highly recommend this class. I wish you could offer it again sooner than next spring.

Excellent course. I've taken other online classes using R, but none have the level of practical applicability and plethora of real-world examples that this course has. The homework problems are FUN, and I am already thinking in the "analytics" mindset (what potential variables could be used to predict promotions at work... :) ) Can't recommend this course highly enough!!

I have taken a number of online data analytics and statistics courses and this is much, much better than any of the other courses. It does not assume any prior knowledge and teaches you the techniques you need to know in a logical, step by step manner. The lectures are all based on interesting practical problems. The homework exercises are well designed and help reinforce your knowledge of the techniques. This requires a significant time investment - ten hours a week, about a hundred hours over the course of the program - but it is well worth it.

I had some prior experience in computiing and statistical analysis with the software R but this course of lectures and examples took my skill and knowledge to a new level!! All modules were informative, interesting and most importantly challenging. Practical homework assignments tested the theory and new techniques learned in class and provided the ideal place to practice those newfound skills and abilities. The lectures and lecturing team were enthusiatic, supportive and well organised! :) I learnt so much here it's difficult to summarise in one paragraph but overall GREAT COURSE and I would reccomend it to anyone.

This was one of the bes courses that I have taken, I already took courses from Coursera and edx and this one offers a methodologic and practical study. Is very well designed, also the most fun part was the Kaggle competition where you have to put all your knowledge that you have learned in the course. It's not difficult to learn and could be great that the Staff could add more methods and make a longer course!, Thanks MIT!!!

This course is extremely well-designed. I looked forward to the new set of lectures each week. Each installment walks you to an interesting case which provides hands-on opportunity to apply new techniques on tons of real data. Then, you are treated to a set of homework which provide even more opportunities to apply the techniques on equally interesting topics. This is a world-class mooc. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I had no prior experience with R or any of the models that we learned. We covered CART, linear & logistic regression, random forest, cross validation, linear & integer optimization, and more. The class was worth every second I invested. I will take it a second time, as what you learn is simply so powerful that you could easily want to master any of them for your professional purposes. I'm working on my third masters degree, and hands down this class was truly memorable. I will always have fond memories of both the challenges and triumphs. As for workload, I feel I spent about 10-15 hours a week. I'm sure this varies between people.

This was an excellent well structured introduction to the field of analytics, which managed to preserve the balance between a rigorous statistical background into the tools used in analytics and real life examples of how analytics has been applied to solve real life problems.

I take very courses in edX and Coursera, and this course is the BEST! If you´re not a R guy, do not let that intimidate you. Any knowledge you get here will be useful and a several ways and scenarios, and, at the end, you will run out of words to describe the feeling of having learned it all! Thanks edx and MITx to provides us with a briliant, dynamic and very structured course!

I found the course a to be a fascinating look at the practical use of analytics using real world examples. I felt that it covered a wide range of topics sufficiently enough to introduce me to the field. My only complaint would be the Kaggle competition. Whilst I am glad to be introduced to Kaggle and I expect to spend more time on that website, I found the competition to not be a useful learning tool. The kaggle discussion board made it clear that the individuals excelling at the competition and achieving the highest AUC values had a much more extensive skill set than that covered in the course. I had zero prior experience, and as such I felt there was no space to compete while others were mentioning and employing types of models I had never heard about. As a result, I became discouraged and stopped after two submissions when I had what seemed to be an acceptable AUC value. In the end, I received a grade of 75% so I cannot complain, ... I would like to know how the top 10 students modeled the problem. I suspect their solutions will be far outside the scope of this class, and so the competition and the grading system was heavily skewed in favor of those with prior experience. Aside from this, I am very happy I enrolled in the course, and I feel like I learned a lot. Thank you for putting together a fantastic course!

This is an excellent course that guides you in a hands-on fashion through constructing many types of analytics models. Very useful. Highly recommended. This course goes very well with Intro Statistical Learning from Stanford Online. The Stanford class will give you a good conceptual overview of why you'd use different models and validation schemes, and this course will give you practical guided experience in doing just that.
