"A free eight-week Science of Happiness course that will offer practical, research-backed tips on living a happy and meaningful life."  - The Huffington Post

We all want to be happy, and there are countless ideas about what happiness is and how we can get some. But not many of those ideas are based on science. That’s where this course comes in.

“The Science of Happiness” is the first MOOC to teach the ground-breaking science of positive psychology, which explores the roots of a happy and meaningful life. “The Science of Happiness” is the first MOOC to teach the ground-breaking science of positive psychology, which explores the roots of a happy and meaningful life. Students will engage with some of the most provocative and practical lessons from this science, discovering how cutting-edge research can be applied to their own lives. Created by UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, the course will zero in on a fundamental finding from positive psychology: that happiness is inextricably linked to having strong social connections and contributing to something bigger than yourself—the greater good. Students will learn about the cross-disciplinary research supporting this view, spanning the fields of psychology, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and beyond.

What’s more, “The Science of Happiness” offers students practical strategies for tapping into and nurturing their own happiness, including trying several research-backed activities that foster social and emotional well-being, and exploring how their own happiness changes along the way.

The course’s co-instructors, Dacher Keltner and Emiliana Simon-Thomas, are not only leading authorities on positive psychology but also gifted teachers skilled at making science fun and personal. They’ll be joined by world-renowned experts discussing themes like empathy, mindfulness, and gratitude—experts including Barbara Fredrickson, Paul Ekman, Sonja Lyubomirsky, and Jon Kabat-Zinn. Health professionals who register can earn continuing education units for their participation.

Consider signing up for this course with a friend or group - tweet about your registration, share it on Facebook, and use the buddy system to stay on track. Join the conversation on The Greater Good Science Center Facebook page, or in the BerkeleyX: GG101x The Science of Happiness Facebook group.

Writing a review for this course is pretty difficult. On the one hand, there is quite a bit of information provided on what make someone happy, but on the other, this is definitely a "touchy-feely" course that uses weekly happiness surveys and encourages keeping a journal to measure your own happiness. The neuroscience is not very rigorous – I think the course directors intentionally made this an easy class so they could get more people to sign up and get through the material. Computer graded homework assignments are a breeze. Again, I think this course is really meant as a simple introduction to the science of happiness, yet seems more focused on having the student find his own path to what makes him happy.

This is a great course for people seeking to understand happiness and to learn the tools that can help us become happier in life. It is also a course on positive psychology that will help you understand the things that will definitely make you unhappier in life. A very interesting course that will reveal the effect of oxytocin, cortisol, and other hormones in our brains. Thoroughly enjoyable and highly recommended!

I have really enjoyed this course. Prior to starting I was slightly afraid that it would be sort of 'rainbow and bunny rabbitish,' however it is rooted in neuroscience and research. I am an ACT therapist, I work in a community non-profit agency, and I have incorporated a number of concepts from this class into therapy. Very well done, a review of a number of disciplines related to positive psychology.

The class should be renamed "The Science of Happiness For Extroverts". Like so much else in Western culture, this course and the material it covers is heavily biased toward the "outgoing, gregarious" personality, so prized by our corporate, consumer-driven society. No consideration is given to the fact that the activities/lifestyles that make extroverts "happy" (e.g. vigorous social interaction with large groups of people) often simply put more stress on the introvert. A common oversight.

Pretty interesting course. I learned how much trials go into even a simple concept like happiness. I feel that the course could have been condensed much more. Videos were quite long. The instructors were reading off of a script.

Personally I really loved this class! I apply the things I have learned every day and I am determined to read most of the recommended books! Everybody should do this class! The only suggestion I would like to make, is that in the beginning you could add in a short list of the type of things someone will find when he advances in the classes. Because I found the being very scientific, which is good for understanding what happens in the body when you feel happy, but I read all of the beginning lessons wondering if I was going to find out about practical ways to impact my happiness. Now I having finished the class and I can say that I really have all the needed information and all I need to do is to apply it more and more. A special Thanks for Dacher Keltner and Emiliana Simon-Thomas! I really appreciated both of you for your teaching, your personalities and the way you work together! This is an extraordinary course!

“Flirting with disaster every day (每天和灾难调情 - 老板对我们工作性质的评价)” 我不断的问自己什么是幸福? “Happiness:the experience of joy, contentment, or positive well-being, combined with a sense that one’s life is good, meaningful, and worthwhile.”(幸福是一种快乐,满足,或积极的体验,是一种能够体会到生活是美好的,有意义的,而且有价值的感觉。”) “Flirting with disaster every day (每天和灾难调情 - 老板对我们工作性质的评价)” 我不断的问自己什么是幸福? “Happiness:the experience of joy, contentment, or positive well-being, combined with a sense that one’s life is good, meaningful, and worthwhile.”(幸福是一种快乐,满足,或积极的体验,是一种能够体会到生活是美好的,有意义的,而且有价值的感觉。”) 走神时,人很多时候是在回忆过去(revisit your past),计划将来(plan your future)。 (Depression Is Not a Sign of Weakness. It Is a Sign That You Have Been Trying to Be Strong for Too Long)"。 (You can also register now for a completely self-paced version of the course, which offers a new opportunity for a certificate and discussions with classmates. The self-paced course will go live on December 1, with all course material available at once. You'll just need to complete the graded assignments by May 31, 2015, to earn a certificate of completion.)

This will be my 6th time taking this course! Not because I am a slow processor but because there so much in it that I want to live every day. I am signing on to be a TA and plan to start a local Happiness group in my new hometown. I do not say lightly that if you practice what you learn here, your life will change for the better. This is practical, hands on stuff along with the latest in psychological and neurological research. Don't miss it!

It could be from a relationship or money or family. Happiness is what makes life worth living. When one is not happy , he or she feels sad and depressed. Happiness is a great medicine to our souls. Good job all around. Practical insights and 'how to' methods which came across as built upon research and or careful academic thought. As some one who was involved with adult education at the university level, my hat is off to the organizers. The curriculum struck me as well organized, solid, straight forward, with friendly presentations. One of the better things I have done with my life. All good.

This course offers an uprecedented wealth of resources. I have the feeling that if I redid it three more times, I would still keep on learning new things. If offers insights into cutting edge scientific research around happiness, gratitude, awe, pro-social behavior, etc. Even though the course is not primarily intended to as psychotheraphy (at all!), it does offer tools (also very practical) for improving the quality of life in general, paired with scientific proof of what works and what doesn't.

I audited this course. The course introduces ways of making yourself happier. You may know many of the titles: gratitude, compassion,...beforehand. However, while watching the videos you can focus on your own life to see what you have done to make yourself happier. It is generally a good course. Recommended. Even watching the videos makes you happier because you are trying to implement the ideas in your life subconsciously. The instructors are nice and kind and they really match what they are teaching. I don't give it a 5 because it is a little bit naive. The course does not raise serious challenges of being happy.

I was so much interested and taken by the course to the point of going all the way in reading every article, watching every video and doing all exercises, problems and tests. I ended up feeling more informed about happiness and very eager to deepen my knowledge in this subject. I strongly recommend the course to anyone wishing to pursue a career in a happiness-related subject.
