Course Description

"A free eight-week Science of Happiness course that will offer practical, research-backed tips on living a happy and meaningful life."  - The Huffington Post

We all want to be happy, and there are countless ideas about what happiness is and how we can get some. But not many of those ideas are based on science. That’s where this course comes in.

“The Science of Happiness” is the first MOOC to teach the ground-breaking science of positive psychology, which explores the roots of a happy and meaningful life. Students will engage with some of the most provocative and practical lessons from this science, discovering how cutting-edge research can be applied to their own lives. Created by UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, the course will zero in on a fundamental finding from positive psychology: that happiness is inextricably linked to having strong social connections and contributing to something bigger than yourself—the...

“The Science of Happiness” is the first MOOC to teach the ground-breaking science of positive psychology, which explores the roots of a happy and meaningful life. Students will engage with some of the most provocative and practical lessons from this science, discovering how cutting-edge research can be applied to their own lives. Created by UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center, the course will zero in on a fundamental finding from positive psychology: that happiness is inextricably linked to having strong social connections and contributing to something bigger than yourself—the greater good. Students will learn about the cross-disciplinary research supporting this view, spanning the fields of psychology, neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and beyond.

What’s more, “The Science of Happiness” offers students practical strategies for tapping into and nurturing their own happiness, including trying several research-backed activities that foster social and emotional well-being, and exploring how their own happiness changes along the way.

The course’s co-instructors, Dacher Keltner and Emiliana Simon-Thomas, are not only leading authorities on positive psychology but also gifted teachers skilled at making science fun and personal. They’ll be joined by world-renowned experts discussing themes like empathy, mindfulness, and gratitude—experts including Barbara Fredrickson, Paul Ekman, Sonja Lyubomirsky, and Jon Kabat-Zinn. Health professionals who register can earn continuing education units for their participation.

This course was an eye-opener, practical and intuitive -- you will find yourself nodding your head and saying "oh yes, that's so true... I've often felt this way but didn't know how to express or analyse it". Don't miss it!

I really enjoyed taking the course. I learned a lot. I really appreciate the numerous articles and books that were recommended. I really liked that we learned the impact of the practices taught by trying them ourselves. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in understanding how one may get happier, for life.

As a college professor (of psychology), I am extremely impressed with the course and with the platform. I would love to be able to take these courses when I have time rather than on a prescribed schedule.

One of my favorite topics. I'd come here for Computer Science, but I came across GG101x and the launch was just a few days away. So, I enrolled in the edXDEMO101 first to get myself prepared and then signed up for this Happy Course which is now only less than 24 hours away. In the meantime, I browsed UC Berkeley’s GGSC and got myself familiarized with the themes and now I have mixed feelings: On the one hand, I'm relieved that I already have some prior knowledge about the topic since it has been among my interests, and on the other, I feel stressed about how I'm going to deal with the content and tests since it's my first MOOC experience.

It took me years to learn how to be miserable. I hope that just a single course will teach me how to be happy. If you can cut through major depression and severe anxiety disorder, and turn me back into the smiling, laughing person I used to be, I won't complain much.

2 hours commitment per week over 10 weeks for this airy-fairy course is a huge demand. I hope this course can deliver (within 10 weeks) what it promises.

This looks like a natural follow-on to the edx 'Becoming a Resilient Person' offering from Washington Uni via EDX. The course workload estimate of 2 hrs per week suggests a similar style, 5*s in anticipation.
