Course Description

We will explore the psychology of our everyday thinking: why people believe weird things, how we form and change our opinions, why our expectations skew our judgments, and how we can make better decisions. We’ll discuss and debate topics such as placebos, the paranormal, medicine, miracles, and more.

You will use the scientific method to evaluate claims, make sense of evidence, and understand why we so often make irrational choices. You will begin to rely on slow, effortful, deliberative, analytic, and logical thinking rather than fast, automatic, instinctive, emotional, and stereotypical thinking.

We will provide tools for how to think independently, how to be skeptical, and how to value data over personal experience. We will examine the mental shortcuts that people use and misuse, and apply this knowledge to help make better decisions, and improve critical thinking.

I had no prior experience with this subject ( that I knew about, but then discovered that I already had to some extent). The course is well planned and easy to follow. The profs deliver the course material in a fresh and simple way to get students thinking. The videos are great and guest interviews extremely helpful. I've learnt lots in just a few weeks and have already passed on some of this thinking - especially ways of studying - to others. A must course to take!!!

I've read some reviews that criticize the lesson format of two instructors having a conversation about the material. descriptions like artificial, and corny came up. At first I almost agreed, but I stuck with the course, and I have a theory about why they took this approach. One of the lessons focusing on learning, and how to truly acquire information that sticks with you. Re-outputting information that you have learned (through writing from memory, flashcards, explaining concept to others) enhances your ability to retain information. The two instructors seem to be conducting prompted conversations, but they were recalling the topic of the episodes from memory. Or atleast it looked that way. So my guess is they were practicing what they preached, even though it may appear artificial. Most of the content I found immediately useful.

I didn't make it far into the course, primarily because it was rather "infotainment" than an academic presentation. The structure seems to be oriented along various cognitive phenomenons, describing them mainly with anecdotes and interactive experiments. All that is not very concise. What's missing are clear definitions, a wider overview of the available empirical evidence, and most importantly, placement of the phenomenons into sociological context and stating their implications.

I abandoned the course after the 1st session because i found it too annoying to learn from videos w subtitles and verbatim transcripts. If the videos had displayed high quality production values, perhaps ... but they were education-institution videos. I would recommend a variety of learning materials to suit different learning styles or a professional production house. I have no doubt the content was 1st rate given the provider, shame about the delivery.

This was the first course I did on EdX about three years ago. I am now completing a psychology and education Master's at Cambridge and can state unequivocally that it was this course that started the journey. It really is a tour de force of the myriad ways we trip ourselves up and has applications that extend to just about every corner of conscious life. I hold with particular fondness week 5 (if memory serves) in which we're introduced to the great Daniel Kahneman and Bob Bork. There's also a great dynamic between the two presenters - the generation gap ensures a diversity of opinions; their humility in drawing on their own cognitive weaknesses inspires trust in their message and makes for great viewing. Of the now tens of great courses I've completed at edX, this will hold a special place in my heart. Couldn't recommend this any more strongly.

Very interesting course which made me aware of the subtle influences which guide behaviour, how scientific reasoning and studies negate many popular fads and confirm the biases we have, insight on studying methods and many other areas of reasoning which really made me think a lot and in a more scientific way. The lectures are often short and simple and set the basis for the very large number of interesting interviews and links to articles which follow. I intend to retake this course in future if it is available.

I have done a number of superb edX courses but I was disappointed with this one. I think it was a great shame that this course relied so heavily on white men! Diversity in terms of speakers and in terms of delivery - there are other ways of presenting information besides videos and the artificial conversations between the 2 instructors were cringe-making - would greatly improve this course.

Amongst other things, the course examines the error of depending on testimonials such as this one. Don't join it unless you would like to learn some good and interesting things that might make you better at making decisions based on evidence, and not on hearsay.

Very good, very comprehensive. Come out knowing more than coming in (not always the case!), and with an extremely useful little toolkit to approach the world, from the mundane to the professional and yes, the romantic. Helps you think clearly!

I am a training in problem solving for process improvements using the Six Sigma Methodology. I have gained a lot of insights to better teach the Six Sigma tools, with the additional understanding of the human bias/anchors premating their thinking (mine thinking included). I want to thank the instructors, that are the forefront of the deliver of this work, to the experts through out the world that participated to make their contribution in understanding human thinking behaviors and to the people behind the scenes, that make possible the deliver of this great concepts to better understand humans thinking process. I am so grateful for all your contributions!. I'll do my share to increase human thinking effectiveness! Thank you. Fidel Gutierrez Monterrey, Mexico

I always was interested in psychology. Now this course gave me the chance to learn about everyday psychology, which is really usefull. I have done four courses at this platform so far. For me, as a non-native-speaker, this course was the toughest. But it was worth it.

This course is simply amazing! You will learn to see Life from an objective point of view, you'll get you know yourself in depth and learn to understand other people's behavior. It'll also make you a better person because you'll learn to see things from other people's perspective and become aware of things you never knew you even did! If you are into psychology, have problems interacting with other people, want to understand the human subconscious or simply love to question everything and the human mind intrigues you, this course is for you! I highly recommend it to thinkers and philosophers.

Best course I've ever taken. This course is totally different from any other course you can take. The lectures are conversations, high quality production, there are interviews with many experts in the field, engaging and consistent material and talks, covers all the aspects of reasoning and everyday thinking. You will learn how to think better by enhancing your reasoning, improving the way you learn, applying psychology, logical and cognitive concepts in your life, therefore perfecting the manner you see the world. Must-take course!

Think101x is the best course I've taken on Edx. It completely changed how I see the world, how I think, and how I argue and consider other people's arguments. The instructors are great at explaining things clearly. This course is actually really fun, it doesn't feel like school work at all and the quizzes aren't too hard, I was actually surprised at how much I learned. It defiantly deserves 5 stars, I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to think better, learn better, and understand people better.

This is an absolutely brilliant course! I have dabbled in other MOOCs but they have not kept me engaged in the same way this one has. The instructors are both knowledgeable and likeable, and have an excellent presentation style as if you were eavesdropping on a conversation. Furthermore, the filming and production is really intriguing. Well done all round!

I love this course. It tremendously changes my thinking on African traditional beliefs. Were the authors some gurus, I would convert to their religion. This course should be extended to popular seminars to change mind for development.

Many thanks for the team of this course! It was really a wonderful experience and a great pleasure for me to be one of the students of this course. I'm appreciating so much the big work and the efforts that were done to realize it. The topics, the interviews, the videos the" what" and the" how", all were directed to increase our awareness to our behavior and ways of thinking. I'm going to suggest and to convince other persons to take this course.

This was a great course even if extensive and more intense than most Edx courses I have pursued. I certainly did not agree with all the materials but it got me thinking and reviewing my biases. I now consciously strive to be a lot more tolerant of differing opinions and try to understand why someone thinks or sees something in a different way.
