Course Description

Genetics permeates every aspect of the 21st century, from our doctors' offices to our judicial systems. By the end of this course, you’ll be well prepared to deal with both today’s genetic issues and new questions that are sure to arise in the future.

This challenging but very rewarding course focuses on the genetics issues that impact our health and well-being, while providing the same rigorous examination of genetics principles as a college genetics course.

The course is taught in two parts. Part 1 consists of 6 modules followed by a final exam. You’ll learn how genes work and how the different versions we inherit affect our daily lives and our society.  You’ll learn to evaluate predictions about health risk, why DNA fingerprinting is so powerful, and what analysis of your DNA does and doesn’t reveal.

I learned more than I expected to and really enjoyed it. The quizzes and peer explain assignments enhanced my understanding and retention of the content, which touched on so many interesting and useful aspects of genetics.

Perfect - the course is awesome as you really need deep understanding to answer the questions. You have to make the effort to comprehend the videos content and by this you learn a lot. I have the feeling, that I gained quite a deep understanding of genetics through this course. Thank you very much Dr. Redfield

Course Content: > Contents are nicely arranged Course Instructor: > Instructor is knowledgeable but her presentation skill is not so sharp > Some things still in debate so instructor should tell them instead of expressing her own opinion Quizzes are poorly designed. Many counterintuitive answer options are included. Quiz expects your deep understanding but lecture just touch a little so you have deep dive by your own

The best course I've ever taken online. Although I am not a biologist, everything was so clear and exciting that I could not help spending my time on it. Professor Redfield has set quite an impressive example of how to teach, how to test your knowledge and how creative you home assignments should be. I am very impressed with this.

I really enjoyed and learned so much about Genetics after taking this course. I have taken Genetics in graduate school but I didn't appreciate how useful and practical Genetics is until I took this course. I highly recommend this course to everyone.

Very well presented course. Set at just the right level for its stated objectives - I found its focus on relevant and useful topics very helpful as a newcomer to this area. Covers key material without getting bogged down in biochemical detail. The lectures are very clear and there are excellent links to interesting support material. The course staff and TAs were very quick to respond to questions and provide additional background.

Content = the best for introduction to genetics (and more) Instructor = very good (no, really Awesome!) I enjoyed that a scientist could be funny besides nerdy. All explanations are really very clear and didactic. Provider: very stable. All materials were available in all formats.

My background is in accounting and commerce. I have never studied biology or botany. I thus approached the course with some trepidation. But the friendly manner and easy-to-understand explanations of complex mechanisms soon allayed my fears and I became incredibly interested in the course, so much so that I will definitely enrol for the second part next year. The only downside was the inability of the edX software to mark part-questions correct (this has, I understand, been corrected for future offerings) and the inferior edX discussion software design (not a fault of the course) - compare it to the Coursera system which is vastly superior. Professor Redfield is a gem.

I took this course in 2013 and it remains one of my favorite MOOCs. Dr. Redfield is thorough and gives great explanations and examples. The material and instruction were incredibly interesting and fun, and the quizzes were a real challenge that tested learning on a deeper level than simple fact recall. This class was a wonderful update to my 1990s Master's degree in biology - I learned so much more than I thought I would. I highly recommend this to anyone with the basics of biology and genetics already under their belt.

Instructor makes biology easier for CS student. I joined this course last year because I'm working as Bioinformatics researcher with CS background. So many material out there but this content and instructor help me the most. I liked the way she introduced new topic gradually and repeat it each time with little more advance content. Thanks you so much Dr. Rosemary

I did the course last year and enjoyed the approach of making knowledge of genetics useful. I liked that the instructor was very present in the forum discussions and that the tests and that the evaluations were very well (and intelligently) made, which enhanced the learning experience even more. In short, I learned a lot and had a good time at the same time.
