Course Description

Learn how to build and query corpora in this practical course

The course aims to:

  • Equip those taking the course with skills necessary for collecting and analysing large digital collections of text (corpora).

  • Provide educational support for those who want to use the corpus method.

  • Demonstrate the use of corpus linguistics in the humanities, especially History.

  • Give a sense of the incredibly wide uses that corpora have been put to.

  • Allow those with an interest in language, who have not heard of the corpus approach before, a new way of looking at language.

  • Demonstrate that corpus approaches to social science can offer valuable insight into social reality by investigating the use and manipulation of language in society.

Other than an interest in the study of language, there are no requirements to join this course.

It has been sometime since I completed this course on its initial run so my recall will inevitably be weak and also full disclosure I was on the mentoring team on its last run. My abiding memory is that +++if you want an introduction to corpus linguistics (CL) do this course!+++ The quality of the CL team is tremendous. From my point of view as someone who had some experience of CL beforehand some of the content needed tweaking in terms of what I would have liked to have seen more of. Having said that the third round included some marvelous features such as 6 months access to a world leading commercial corpus tool, maybe for the next run this will be 12 months access : ). The FutureLearn interface also needs some tweaking e.g. a search feature would be handy. Saying all this I will still be enrolling on the next run to see what changes will have been effected : )

This is a great course. It is a fantastic introduction to corpus linguistics, but also useful if you already have some experience. I can recommend it.

The best MOOC I have done. It is a practical introduction to Corpus Linguistics methodology. In my opinion, the excellent online support from the course makes this MOOC an excellent no-cost, easy-access way to embark on the field of CL.

This was very definitely a university-level course (i wish it was possible to get an idea of the standard of the various Futurelearn courses before signing up, as they vary so much). I was expecting more of a general overview of corpus linguistics, but the course went into considerable depth, and there was lots of additional reading material available (in addition to the main course material). I had studied some linguistics previously, but not really touched on corpus linguistics, and felt the course gave me some real insights into this area.

I gained a great insight into the world of Corpus Linguistics. As a complete beginner to this subject I only accessed the basic course materials but found they offered a lot of knowledge and were very informative.
