Introduction to Islamic Finance (Shari'ah)

This course focuses on the Islamic financial transactions which represent the core business activities of the Islamic finance. It consists of four parts;

Part 1 - Shari’ah foundation in Islamic finance, where the focus will be on the introduction to Islamic finance and basic aspects of Shari’ah and its framework in Islamic finance.

Part 2 – Shari’ah framework in Islamic finance

Part 3 - Basic Shari'ah requirements in financial transactions, the focus will be on the basic requirements of Shari’ah contract in Islamic commercial law.

Part 4 - Application of Shari'ah contracts in Islamic finance will further build an understanding of the various contracts/applications of Islamic finance and how they are used in Islamic finance.

About this course

The aim of this course is to provide a basic foundation in Shari'ah that enables the student to comprehend the different aspects of Islamic finance. This course provides key terms and aspects in Shari'ah for easy penetration to other subjects in Islamic financial transactions. They are also needed in order to understand Islamic finance courses.

What you will learn

The student will learn different aspects of Shari’ah in business and finance. The course covers the Shari’ah framework and the composition of the Islamic financial system, where the student will learn the major primary sources of Shari’ah and secondary sources of Shari’ah used to derive Shari’ah ruling. The student will also learn maqasid al Shari’ah or the objectives of Shari’ah along with its different categories and legal maxims. The course also covers the major aspects of the theory contract from Shari'ah perspective that govern activities and contracts in the financial system. This foundation must be understood before embarking on the Shari'ah application of each specific contract such as murabahah and along with their related application in Islamic finance.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

• Determine the Shari’ah values and principles in Islamic finance

• Identify the Shari’ah aspects in business and finance

• Apply the Shari’ah contracts in Islamic financial services

• Assess and evaluate the products and services offered by the Islamic financial institutions.
