Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

It takes practice and experimentation to get good handle on how watercolors work and react to different processes.  While we won't be going over how to draw shoes (shoe drawing downloads will be available for you to practice on), you will know key takeaways like when to use more or less water, how to use different brushes, and how to make a basic color chart with the paint you have.

I really love Katie's style. Her work is really inspirational. She gives away her secrets in this class which I'm learning to use to my advantage. Over all it's about getting you watercolors out and letting your hand flow through the paper while learning some awesome techniques.

A very quick review of watercolour technique. The extra information on texture was helpful and fun to play with while I got used to the paint again.

I really like this class, it is very basic, very basic, so if you are new to watercolor this is a great choice, it is also short, doesn't go into much detail, I believe to get good at anything you just have to practice, practice. I also think the idea of just using shoes is great for a beginner watercolor class, if you don't know how to draw well, you can always trace a shoe from a photo using a light box and than start painting.

Having prior experience with watercolors in high school art classes many years ago, I was familiar with the medium on a very basic level. Katie's class was a great refresher course, and she provides some good tips for general control to get you started. Using shoes as the project theme is nice, as it also allows you to experiment with painting textures, something I had not done before.

Very nice ideas for blooming water colour artist on how to display texture of different materials. The content is very basic, though, so it might not be suitable for more experienced water colour artists.

Loved this class! I wanted to try out watercolor and this was the perfect way to start. I'm not really an artist of any sort, just a stay at home mom who wants to try out a new hobby. Pretty much hooked! Katie does a really great job explaining techniques and tools.

The exercises were a lot of fun, and a great way to experiment with how to convey textures in watercolour. Katie's work, of course, is beautiful and inspiring, and so was that of the other students.

I have long admired the beautiful watercolor illustration on paper fashion - My portfolio is comprised of almost every other medium and have always been mystified by the beauty of watercolor. So happy to have had a tutorial from one of my favorite fashion illustrators and have learned a great deal. Thanks for answering all my questions and showing me the technique behind your gorgeous illustrations! Best of luck to you Katie! I'll definitely be watching your next tutorial about runway next!

I am a beginner at watercolor painting and this class was wonderful to get me familiar with working with water, a paintbrush and watercolor paints. I highly recommend taking the time to make a good sized color palette - I used 18 colors total and I'm glad I pushed myself to finish it. Also, I'm not a real "fashion" type person - so the shoes were not really what I wanted to do - however, I took the time and did them anyways, and it was truly the best way to learn how to make different effects such as shiny leather, suede and sequence. I loved this class! Great job Katie! :)

I am a complete watercolor novice and I felt this class really lacked direction. There were no suggestions on where to buy the supplies, how to really use the palette or how often she tend to dip her brush in water to clean it. I think it gave just enough info to make the whole class confusing that I didn't feel prepared to pass step 1.

Hey Katie, Superb class! I enrolled in the 'Basic Watercolors' class. I think your work is just great and the class you took, defines absolute value for money! I just had one urgent request, if you could tell substitutes for your art supplies because in counties like India we don't really get all the supplies as enlisted by you. As in if you could recommend some other easily available options? Id be EXTREMELY grateful :)
