In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

What You'll Learn

  • Sketch. The first stage of the class is to start sketching out rough thumbnails that focus purely on the shape and silhouette of your character. During this stage I will explain the importance of brush choices / strokes and speed.
  • Refine. I the next stage of the class we'll begin the process of refining the character. You'll have some pretty rough images from the thumbnail stage and will start cleaning them up and evaluating the design, shape, pose and structure of your thumbnails.
  • Variation. Standard with almost any character design, for clients in particular, next comes the stage of variation. Rarely will a client want to see a finished design instantaneously, We'll go through the process of picking a refined thumbnail as your starting point and varying the design to create alternatives.
  • Final Design. In the final stage you'll have chosen your final character design and it's time to add in some detail and really make the character shine.

What You'll Do

You will create a final concept art piece, designing a character of your choice. This will be executed from start to finish, covering all essential techniques and ideas in concept art.

This was a great help. It confirmed several questions and ideas I had about processes and really just opened up a much quicker route to painting and colouring. Fantastic class, I would recommend it to anyone whether just starting painting or an experienced painter. Hope to see more classes from Charlie Bowater!

Charlie presented a great class and gave a lot of good info on thumbnailing and her process. Wish I could download the class, the steaming constantly paused and at least doubled the amount of time to view the course.

I recommend this class for those who already have some art/figure drawing experience. Charlie's videos give a good overview of her process for character illustration, but she does not go into detail about anatomy or how to draw people. There's a big student community that is pretty supportive, which is good because Charlie is no longer an active part of the class. The project steps are helpful but you do need to be self-motivated.

This class was just what I've been looking for! Its one thing to watch speed paint videos with music overlaid and not really understand how they did certain things but Charlie is thorough, honest and open about processes, methods, technique etc. Its really refreshing to see the 'ok this is how i do it' way done like this! Great class!!

I like the method that Charlie uses, it can provide fleshed out renderings with relatively quick time once you get the hang of it. The only thing I would recommend is a chapter on coloring your black and white rendering, which would have been immensely useful, and it's a shame that it's missing.

Efficient, great and to-the-point class. This is especially useful for artists having already some knowledge/skills in drawing characters and costumes and wanting to learn an efficient process of character concept art. Beginners will also learn a lot!

Well taught with the information available in video and written form. Steps are easy to follow and don't train you how to draw one specific type of character or genre but are applicable to any project in any style.

Charlie is a great instructor and super talented. She communicated very well and thoroughly explained her process. I learned a lot from her workflow and plan to incorporate it whenever I can with future projects. This is a must- have class if you're into character design or illustration.

I already have recommended this class to many people! I'm only on stage 2 but I'm really enjoying it. I've found designing quite stressful because I didn't know how to approach the process. The problem was I would try to get down the idea on paper and be frustrated that it wasn't perfect the first time. So far, I feel like breaking down the process has made me make more creative decisions and also put less pressure on myself.

Amazing class! atmosphere is great all the students are as helpful as Charlie was herself. Amazing video's well organized and even months after I can come back and watch and review. A lot of digital improvement and predictive of how I work and what works for me personally was discovered in the class. I'd recommend it to everyone! I hope to see a colouring class follow up in the future ;) x

Wonderful class. Great approach to character design and very useful to any artist. Charlie Bowater is extremely organized in her teaching and is simply amazing to watch recreate her method. What a great investment.

Charlie Bowater is such an excellent teacher. Her videos were helpful in showing me what I really wanted to achieve, when creating a character, and after watching her videos, I can truly say that I've learned a lot since first starting this class. Not to mention she was really fantastic to find the time to comment on a lot of our projects. I already respected her as an artist, but now I respect her even further just because of that. The other students are so kind and constructive with their criticisms, which really helped me get motivated with my character design. I'm really happy that I took this class. Thanks, Charlie.

This class strongly relates to my interests as an artist and an illustrator. I particularly enjoyed watching the teacher, Charlie Bowater, just paint - I feel I learned quite a bit from watching her example. I also found her encouraging words and insights very motivating. I would definitely recommend this class to intermediate and advanced digital artists/ art students.

Charlie Bowater is both an excellent artist and teacher. I'm so glad I took this class as what I've learned is far more valuable than what the class charges. The best part is that the information doesn't go away and I can come back and review if I want. Highly recommended!
