In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

Course Description

The rise of sites like Medium and Longreads have inspired a resurgence in creative nonfiction—that compelling, leisurely writing that weaves true ideas and characters into stories that reveal as much about its readers as its subject. But where do those stories come from? And how do they work?

In this class, Susan Orlean, best-selling author and longtime New Yorker staff writer, walks us through her writing process for transforming ordinary subjects into exceptional stories. She reveals how she prepares to write, takes a close look at her classic Esquire piece “The American Male at Age Ten,” and delves into why curiosity, revision, and collaboration are at the heart of being a writer.

In under two hours, this class demystifies the writing craft so that you can write a short and unforgettable profile of your own. Whether you’re an active writer, aspiring freelancer, or simply curious about the power...

Not only is Susan Orlean an amazing writer I have enjoyed for years, she is a generous, precise and articulate teacher. Each one of these videos is packed with Orleanian gems - things she's learned and is willing to share about the elements of writing. She distinguishes narrative non-fiction, but acknowledges it's all about good writing - and if you care about good writing, in any form, this is an amazing opportunity to learn from a master. No fluff here, each little video essay is so helpful - about gathering information, "reporting, thinking and writing," and Orlean is so entertaining - likening the lede in a story to a strip tease "revealing just enough. Each piece is helpful and inspiring, and her presentation a pleasure to experience. I'm grateful Orlean and Skillshare made this course available.

This class ROCKS! Susan walks you through the steps of creative nonfiction writing with ease and shares her own secrets for writing excellent nonfiction stories. I am launching a progressive talk-radio show and blog in the deep south and felt I needed to know more about how to write effective articles and scripts. I've written and published 3 books (on accident and only because of my specialized knowledge on the subject I wrote for), but I have absolutely no academic or professional background in journalism or creative writing. I leaned on my editors for guidance throughout the process and found that I LOVE to write! My current project has a decent following and grows each day so I want to make sure I'm presenting myself as knowledgeable and professional. Susan's class helped me see how my "layman" style can be improved with her excellent guidance and teachings. I'm working on my project now and actually look forward to constructive ... Susan Orlean shares the process she uses to write best-selling nnonfiction. She is funny, intelligent, and a pleasure to listen to. Creative nonfiction can be extremely difficult to write. Orlean cuts to the heart of the process and shows you how it's done: simply, effectively, cheerfully.

Susan Orlean is one impressive lady. She's articulate, experienced, and generous with all the lessons she's learned over the years as a talented writer. Whether you're a beginner or a long-time writer, this class has something to tell you. It's comprehensive and well organized. Her teaching style is perhaps the most genuine I have thus encountered. Do yourself a favor and take this class.

Susan Orlean is a thorough and clear teacher, and I can honestly say that this is the best thing I've ever done to help me become a better writer. I often find other writers' advice to be abstract and a bit ambiguous (mostly idealistic thinking than practical techniques) yet Susan strikes a great balance between the two. If you're a writer, this is absolutely essential learning.
