In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

What You'll Make

For this class you will be creating a digital illustration that will be your visual interpretation of an adjective. You will get the choice of one of two adjectives:"quiet" or "loud". You will accomplish this through the use of pattern, texture, and color. Your illustration can be as abstract or literal as you choose. The class will start with you determining how you would like to visualize the word. Based on your ideas and brainstorming, you will then select your strongest directions. This is a great time for you to get feedback from your peers to see if you are communicating the way you would like.

Participating on this class you'll learn a lot of things about Adobe Illustrator. I'm not a beginner in this program but there were things that were new for me. Brad will teach you also the steps to draw a character, like creating mind-map, sketching, drawing, using colors and textures. He is totally a pro and you will learn great things in this amazing class.

I went in looking for help with textures and patterns in Illustrator. The course really helped me see how I can take more control to create my own or manipulate other patterns and textures. The lessons are very straightforward and filled with great tips and tricks to get the most out of program and be efficient as well!

While I thought the lessons were well thought out and helpful – the lack of feedback really felt like taking a tutorial online. There are plenty of magazines and books available to learn the same concepts and the reason I enrolled was for discussion and feedback. Sadly, this class is void of both. I think if I had enrolled early on that this would have been a different experience. Working in a bubble from a digital screen forces one to make all of the decision and choices. This is fine in some mediums, actually great when you not looking to learn certain skills… But when you want some idea if you are on the right track it becomes very difficult. I found that online forms helped me with completing the project and that the people there were very helpful and engaging… So if you're taking this alone; go elsewhere for feedback and other thoughts.

Fantastic course content! Felt like I got really good value for money! Ideal for the up and coming designer / illustrator to pick up a few valuable tips and tricks they can implement in their daily work. I picked up so many new ideas and skills that I cannot wait to use in my next projects! It was also great to so much insight into Brad's process and methods. Super positive to see we share a similar approach to tackling various parts of a project. Made me feel like I am on the right track! Thanks so much for sharing Brad!

I think overall is a good class, I do learn some trick outa class, but there is one disconnection for the entire class, for the "quiet" n " loud" project, he just show some random sketch from other people, and not even explain how you connect the ideas with the final piece together, and didn't show how to keep some of the good sketch and orgernize them to a good basic layout. Instead, he jumped to how to use the software and the little drawing tricks too fast. So after the class, I'm still confused about how to tight up the ideas with the first step of drawing together, and don't understand why he brought up the "Quiet" and "Loud" project at the very beginning.

This is the second class on Skillshare I took with Brad Woodard (the last one was "Learn the Ins and Outs of Illustrator"), and once again this was an amazing learning experience. In his last class, I learned the basics of using Illustrator and this class helped bring my Illustration to the next level. I just started learning Illustrator and I already feel like I grew so much, because of this class. I learned so many different ways to add texture and the extra details to make illustration really shine. I also learned Brad's conceptual approach to coming up with ideas for the illustrations, including word lists and sketches which was also very helpful.

Very informative, entertaining and well structured. I have a few years using my AI under my belt already, but I learned some new ways to customize my color pallet. I also like the workaround for distorting the pesky diamond shape, which is in reality just a square in a corner. I would definitely recommend this class to beginners and professionals alike.
