In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

You will learn to see space like an artist, conceptualizing the translation from our real world to the two dimensional.

What You'll Learn

  • References. Where do you find ideas and inspiration? What should you research? Why is it important to get different kinds of references?
  • Initial Sketch. You'll learn how to sketch efficiently in Photoshop, considering composition.
  • Values. We'll explore communicating value in space within your digital painting.
  • Composition Editing. Recreate the final compositions and split volumes into layers. Learn why using solids is important and why we keep edge information.
  • Color. We'll add color and discuss basic hues & tones.
  • Brush Detailing. We'll start our polishing phase by hand-painting details using Photoshop brushes.
  • Texturing. You will learn how to apply photo texturing to your workflow and how it can help the detailing phase.
  • Lighting & Effects. We will add final touches by adding cinematic lighting and some small effects and polishes.

What You'll Do

You will efficiently utilize techniques in Photoshop and apply them to create your own unique digital painting of an environment. You will experiment with light sources and rendering, color choices and depth. Rather than mimicking work, you will be empowered to create your own concept. You'll end up with a final piece of digitally painted artwork!

  • Deliverable. You'll create a digital painting of a fantasy landscape in Photoshop.
  • Brief. You'll use references to create a 2-dimensional sketch in Photoshop. Your composition will be treated with values to create three dimensions. Colors and textures will be added with acute brush detailing. Finally, you'll add lighting and effects to your composition to create a cinematic effect.
  • Collaboration. As you go through the class, update your project and share your progress with your fellow students. Ask your peers for their perspective on your composition. Give each other critical feedback.
  • Specs. By the end of this class, you will have artistic rendition of a fantasy landscape, painted in Photoshop.

An understanding of illustration fundamentals, a clear and focused process, and varied technical knowledge are crucial to being a successful digital painter. This course will not only teach you how to paint in Photoshop, but also how to see with an artist's eye and translate that vision to your work.

The class was helpful, I did learn some things I'll put into practice in my own work, the videos are very methodical and clear, easy to follow. My only criticism would be I expected a bit more content, perhaps at the end he shown quick examples of applying the same techniques to different types of landscapes. How its would apply for water or buildings or little bit of detail into perspective. But in general it was useful

Great course, though a bit more detail on the brushes being used to get certain textures, and perhaps another image with different assets just to show the evolution of the workflow in a different environment would have been some nice additions. All in all though, great course that boosted my creativity.

Absolutely fabulous class. Jonas shows real professionalism and teaches intermediate theory and techniques with ease. I enjoyed watching and working with the materials and have now learned some very cool layer mask tricks that I didn't know before. I finished the class with an image that I am very happy with. Thanks Jonas for all of your time and hard work and for sharing your skills with us. You're amazing. Cheers, Jaime jaimegervais.com

Jonas's class is extremely informational- he goes through a step by step process in which he not only goes over his workflow, but also his thought process while he's creating the piece. It's fast and easy to follow, regardless of the skill set you already have. I happened to stumble upon this tutorial before even seeing his full portfolio - and I hope he will be creating other tutorials. Pricing of the class is quite fair, considering he walks you through everything from scratch to finish. I highly recommend this class to anyone who wants to elevate their skills, timing (spent per art piece), workflow and technique.

This class was incredibly educational over a very short timespan: As someone who is still learning how to draw, I not only learned ways in which I can paint a landscape, but also new ways of looking at a drawing, how to go about making one and what elements come into play in drawing something.

If you're experience with painting in photoshop this class is amazing. Jonas De Ro's technique is really fast and produces awesome results. I wouldn't recommend the class to any one that isn't familiar with photoshop though. The tools in photoshop that Jonas uses really are not covered at all.

This was my first Skillshare class and I was absolutely blown away by the quality. Jonas is a natural talent and it was fantastic to watch him work. Sometimes it was a little too fast paced, but on the other hand I really liked the fact that there was always something happening.

As someone just getting into concept art, I found this class very helpful. Touches subjects on scale, atmospheric perspective, photo texturing (although I would have liked to see more of how he rendered the photo textures). Also, it gave me a workflow I can easily follow so I don't get lost midway though my painting.

One thing is left out, Google Jonas De Ro brushes on his deviant art page is the brush set. Not necessary, but I did find them nice, and well organized. I did pick up WAY more in this than I would have watching any old youtube vid.

Jonas classes are very good. He explains everything very well and taught me some techniques that come to me very well in my concepts. Along with James Paick classes ... it's the best I could find explaining in detail the tips you need to make good concepts. I recommend it to everyone!

What Jonas demonstrates in this is how to create landscapes digitally, he goes through how to use reference from photographs and use the world around us an influence, to thumbnailing all the way to producing the final piece, it is very in-depth a topnotch tutoring, the only thing holding you back is your ability within yourself and your imagination, Jonas has covered everything in this class, its great and I highly recommend anyone wishing to further their knowledge on Digital landscape-conceptual art.
