In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

Course Description

In recent years calligraphers have felt an increased demand for two unique skills: modern flourishes that are elegant (without looking like they came out of the eighteenth century) and digitized calligraphy that can be used in print and online in the form of logotypes, advertising, title treatments, printed stationery, and beyond. In this course you will learn my favorite techniques for both skills as you are guided through all the steps of creating your own flourished, calligraphic logotype.

Learning natural, purposeful flourishing techniques is important for any calligrapher or lettering artist, but especially for those who combine script with graphic design, as it is in high demand for calligraphy’s application in logo design, book covers, magazine title treatments, and just about all other forms of hand-drawn script.

Learning natural, purposeful flourishing techniques is important for any calligrapher or lettering artist, but especially for those who combine script with graphic design, as it is in high demand for calligraphy’s application in logo design, book covers, magazine title treatments, and just about all other forms of hand-drawn script.

What You'll Learn

  • Sketching. We’ll start with sketching, covering the basic rules of drawing script letters, and examining opportunities to add flourishes. You will learn to recognize the difference between purposeful flourishes — those that enhance a design — and extraneous ones — those that distract and impede legibility.
  • Adding Flourishes. With a polished sketch in hand, you will then calligraph the design, with emphasis on learning special techniques for calligraphing flourishes.
  • Ink It. With the help of a lightbox we’ll ink our polished sketch using traditional calligraphy supplies: a pointed pen and black ink.
  • Digitizing. Then the computer fun starts! We will bring our design into the computer and polish it further in Photoshop, then vectorize it in Illustrator. I’ll teach you some special techniques for making sure your final logotype retains the integrity of the stroke contrast, including the charming imperfections of the fine hairlines, that it had as ink on paper.

What You'll Make
In this class you will design a word or very short phrase in a flourished calligraphic style to be used as a logotype (or any other sort of type treatment). We'll then walk through the digitizing and vectorizing process.

Loved this skillshare class and would recommend it to anyone looking to further their calligraphy skills. I appreciated the digitalizing section a lot as it wasn't something that I'd gotten a lot of help with before. Molly is a great teacher and her book also has lots of great tips and suggestions.

Molly not only showed off how her craftsman mastership level, but showed how to maintain the natural feel is outstanding. This information is worth the monthly membership alone.

I loved this class so much. Molly goes into great detail without making the class boring or confusing. I actually watched the class on my iPhone while I worked on my MacBookPro, following along with everything she did. Quality of the videos were good, as well as the audio. Well worth my time and money spent!!! You will LOVE this class, don't even think about taking it; JUST DO IT!

As a fairly new (and mostly self-taught) user of photoshop, I was worried I might get lost, but Molly breaks down the steps and is easy to follow. The in- depth look at her process from sketch to vector was also really helpful in managing my own calligraphy workflow.

I had a general idea of how to do this through past experience but I didn't feel I was really "getting it." I was just needing someone to show me things to look out for and "tricks of the trade." This class was perfect! It gave me exactly what I needed and then some!

Love Molly's class so much! She is an excellent teacher. I very much enjoyed combining the class with her book. I am getting so much more confident in my own lettering and calligraphy. I very much recommend it. I'll definitely be going back and referring to the digitizing parts until I get more confident in that arena.

I really liked this class. I think the instruction is top notch and super thorough. As a modification to this course, I would add an additional video lesson on flourishes alone. I think the instructor really glosses over this due to experience. I think it would've been fun to learn or see from her perspective, more about this.

This class is really great and the sort of class that makes me VERY happy to be able to refer back whenever I see fit. Molly's technical skills are process are fascinating and full of little tricks and perfectionism that I wasn't expecting. Very well done!

In general I like this course, but I got irritated about the digital part of it. I am going to need other Photoshop- and Illustrator courses, because most of the things the teacher did was very unnecessary for the result. I was tired and one time got stuck in one of the earlier steps (photoshop) so I asked a friend who does works with illustrator and photoshop -- I solved the same things with far fewer steps (I could practically ignore the photoshop-videos). It was all backwards and apparent that many things was found through trail and error, or a bad online-tutorial. And the Illustrator-steps didn't get to the good stuff, and could be done ( a lot!) better and easier. I know that I am probably not better than the teacher on these programs in general, and I get that people likes basic stuff (but sometimes basic in these manors is harder, because if you just test and try you do things really slowly and harder, for the rest of your lif... I know that I am probably not better than the teacher on these programs in general, and I get that people likes basic stuff (but sometimes basic in these manors is harder, because if you just test and try you do things really slowly and harder, for the rest of your life). I understand the willingness to keep the piece 'alive', but the solutions was sometimes plain silly, even with the wanting to keep imperfections, kept in mind. In happier news the first parts were really nice! I usually rush through the first steps in sketching and re-sketching, but seeing how the teacher worked gave me some energy to at least try it. It was really boring working without ink for so many rounds, but I think that feeling might change when I get better (faster) and more used to it. I borrowed and used a light box for the first time, I'm so glad I found that. And the tip about the eraser mask and the gridded ruler will be really good for me. The teacher is really very good with the analog calligraphy, and had great little tips along the line (yes, even about the digital stuff, it's not all bad!). Seeing someones work process is always nice for figuring out one for one's self, and I liked going to this, my first, class. Thanks

This is one of those classes that's worth the price of admission just to watch Molly do her thing. The videos and sound quality are great too, which helps a lot. Molly is very good at explaining her process and she's really thorough. I learned some great photoshop and illustrator tricks that will be useful for more than just calligraphy. Highly recommend!

Such a great class! What I like about Molly's class (so many reasons!!) is that she takes the time to SHOW her process. You see her constantly changing and erasing her OWN work. It's not just "do this, not that". You see her critique her own work and that is both validating as a beginner calligrapher that mistakes are made and art is a process... , and it's also a great teaching tool to be able to see why one way is more aesthetically pleasing than another. I love that she describes herself as a "perfectionist" and shows and explains why she doesn't like a certain thing.

I learned a lot in this class, Molly is very informative with her material. However, I do wish the steps for the photoshop editing part was explained better- it is quite complex and frustrating to follow the many steps. I use Photoshop everyday for my design work, and yet I had to re-watch about 5 times before I figured out how Molly got to the end point. The part about masking and all the different layers were not explained what their purpose is in the overall design process. It is not easy to follow if you are not well-informed with Photoshop.
