In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

By the end of this class you'll understand how the design process works, how to think like a designer and how to put all the elements of design together to create something amazing. You'll finish with a home page for your portfolio that speaks to your unique design sensibilities.

You may or may not want to be a designer, but learning to think like one is crucial.

This course MAKES SENSE. It's smart, and it explores just how much thought goes into design. It picks apart each element clearly and concisely. Jack's enthusiasm and experience make the lessons very accessible, and the skills learned are fundamental to architecture, web design, typography, illustration— anything design related, which is essentially everything. Jack shows you how design is not something relegated to metropolitan galleries or posh urbanites; it affects and can be affected by anyone. I recommend this to everybody.

The author never really captured my attention. I felt the course has a weak structure, it almost felt as if being improvised on the way. Maybe it was because of the example chosen to teach, and even with this, I felt it really came short to what I expected. Very few takeaways (maybe 3 or 4 at most). If I may be totally honest, I would not recommend this course, unless it gets a total rebuild.

I thought this was a really great intro to design. I can tell a lot of thought went into it, and I really feel like a lot of what was taught is immediately actionable. Thanks!

Watching him painstakingly (and time-consumingly) align all the elements in his mockup, pixel by pixel, was painful. But overall a good intro to design fundamentals.

This was a really fabulous course, packed with value. I learnt so much. I'm not a designer but thought I had the very basics covered through my research. Turns out I didn't! I couldn't recommend this course more highly.

I wasn't sure what sort of design this class was going to talk about (maybe I just missed the part that explained it. It goes through a webpage design process). I liked the initial clear and useful information of what design actually is. I also really enjoyed the clear and logical explanations that guided us through the whole process of designing a legible, clean, neat and organized webpage design. Overall I really liked the class.

This is a great class for people who need to use good design in their work, but aren't "designers." I feel like my workflow is going to be much faster and less painful now!

Great course, I have no skills for design, but this course gave me strong basics of how to use my technical skills to do good design. Never thought that design is so much based on mathematics and symmetry.

I loved this class it was great and the teacher was very very knowledgeable. I would like to see more classes by this teacher and have him go more in depth into different concepts of designing a website. Its all so extensive that I feel like I got just a spoonful of the knowledge.

Totally an amazing course. The course has all the building blocks for a layman (me) to start designing beautiful pages. I found the best parts of the course to be the typography and colors. I recommend this course highly for all novices!

For me, this was a great refresher on design and also an introduction to some basic ideas. I come from an art background, so there are aspects of design I already knew and ideas I haven't explored, so this was a great step towards further training. Thanks!

As a non designer looking to become more well rounded I really thought this was a great class and tool. Jack covered the material very efficiently and effectively and left me with a furthered interest in design and a desire to use my new skills. I also feel more capable of keeping up in discussions with designers, which is a big plus. Can't wait to drop my new found Golden Ratio knowledge during a meeting.
