In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

Course Description

What did Beyonce's Super Bowl performance mean to feminism? Is Girls great art? How does binge-watching TV shows change the way we interpret them?

Pop culture drives national conversations like never before, thanks to social media and blogs. That means there are more opportunities than ever to write about the TV shows, movies, and music you're passionate about -- and you can go beyond the mere who-are-you-wearing/who-are-you-dating fluff that dominates so many entertainment-driven sites and publications.

I've spent a decade on staff at Entertainment Weekly, and write for several publications, including Women’s Health, Runner’s World, Writer’s Digest, Fast Company, and New York‘s Vulture. I've provided pop culture commentary for CNN, VH1, A&E, and ABC. In this class, I'll be sharing my pop culture writing secrets with you so you can begin writing brilliant pieces of your own.

If you want to make a living -- or even just an online splash -- by writing about your favorite stuff, this is the class for you.

In this class, we'll look at some of the best pop culture writing out there, from the likes of The New Yorker, Vulture.com, and The AV Club. We'll talk about ways to keep up with the latest in entertainment, the elements of a "smart" pop culture piece, and how to expand these ideas into book form.

In this class, you'll work to develop your own essay, blog post, or article and submit it for feedback from myself and your classmates.

Hope to see you in class!

Very nice comprehensive class. Some of the information Jennifer gives is absolutely basic stuff that everyone who has ever written a blog post or an article already knows, but it is good to have all that info in one place, so you can come back to it while completing your project assignment. It's a pity I didn't get to complete the class while the peer review option was still available, but still - a good experience.

This class is great if you like the culture of online classes. By which I mean that they are entirely self-directed, and if you don't stay on top of your deadlines, the wave of interaction will pass you by.

This was a pretty simplistic class. The videos give you a lot to think about in terms of your writing, but some of the advice is quite obvious. (Although I am a bit biased, having studied English and Creative Writing, and as a long time blogger in general.) I definitely think Jennifer has a wealth of knowledge, but I wish she would have gone into the more nitty-gritty of her writing process. Additionally, I would have loved to have received some feedback directly from her about my piece.

The instructor takes a logical approach to pop culture writing, stressing the benefits of combining passion and interest to create the best possible piece. I am proud of the piece I wrote for this class.

This class was almost too easy. I did not finish the class but received an email stating it was complete. But I learned a lot from the instructor in her video blogs. Thanks for having me all the same. :-)

I unfortunately missed this class. I was expecting some sort of reminder notice since I signed up months in advance. I'm really disappointed that this happened.

Jennifer's videos were succinct, timely and helpful in helping to encourage me to get started on the pop culture writing assignment. She was quick to answer the posted questions, and encourage the class to give feedback on each other's projects. I took the class to kickstart me, and it did exactly that. I would definitely take another course with Jennifer.

Ms. Armstrong speaks about writing in broad strokes that will help new writers lay a strong foundation for smart articles. However, I'd have liked more specific, in-depth explanations of structure, as well as some instructor feedback on projects.
