In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

Course Description

This class will teach you exactly how to model a 3D hand-held, print-ready, object using only free tools, with no prior experience necessary.

If you've been on the internet in the last year you've probably read an article (or two, or three) about 3D printing and how it's shaping the future of product design forever. Magic!

This class will uncover the core processes behind the hype and share one of the most special qualities of the 3D printing revolution: that it's accessible to anyone and companies like Shapeways, where I work as a Designer Evangelist, are making the process easier than ever.

What You'll Learn

  • What is 3D Printing? We'll define what 3D printing is, why it's gotten so much attention as of late and what its potential could be.
  • Designing from Sketch. We'll also discuss a second way to produce your 3D model - designing from a sketch with a whole host of free software options.

  • From Model to Product. We'll walk through what your next steps would be to get your design printed - what pricing to expect, how it works and where to get it done.

What You'll Make

You'll model your own 3D design for a hand-held object using free software options we'll cover in class. Customize your object (think monograms, colors) and leave this class ready to print!

This class was really great in explaining 3D print basics. It was really easy to follow along too! The only problem I had was that we never actually got to see the finished product after it was printed. This would have been super helpful!

I found this class VERY interesting! I even learned a couple Photoshop Tips, as well! I believe 3D printing will soon be the wave of the future and will open new doors, especially for entrepreneurs who currently are having to manufacture short runs overseas...just to have prototypes of the products they are wishing to sell. This is a GREAT alternative and I would definitely recommend this class!

This was an odd one for me - I know all the graphic design tools, so was a bit bored through them, but the explanation of some of the concepts of 3D was good. The presenter could have been a tad more dynamic though!

Lauren, This has been an awesome class. Providing technical instruction can be a challenge. It can also be frustrating to the student depending on the pace of language. You did a wonderful job! Thanks, Art

How cool. I can hardly wait to get something printed. It would have been nice to see Lauren's printed triangle to bring us totally through the process.

Well explained. Thank you for explaining every little details even a new user who is really new to design (even 2d design) can learn easily. Well done. Worth folowing the class you will learn so many things and will give you the expert feeling at the end of the class.

Thoroughly explained, as she said, you'll need very little design knowledge and you can create a great product. I am highly interested in my own 3d prints now, thank you!

I found this lesson extremely helpful. Lauren went step-by-step, which is just what I needed. This was my first build and following Lauren's directions made it a successful one! I would highly recommend this to anyone who is learning how to create a 3D project.

For those that are already fairly skilled in design (Photoshop, Illustrator, general design software), this may be a tad too intro level, but important considerations like material dimensional constraints are introduced. But no shot of a finished product?

What fantastic introduction to Skillshare classes, and a great place to start with 3D printing. I'm a 3D modeler and have always wanted to figure out 3D printing, but have never had anywhere to start. This was a really easy, non- intimidating way to learn the basics. I went from wanting to get in to 3D printing to wearing my own 3D printed gauged earrings in 4 weeks!

I would suggest this class to individuals who are just beginning to think in 3D. Although, I dont particularly agree with the design process regarding the transfer of files from one program/software to another. In total 4 programs or technologies are used before an upload to Shapeways is possible. If you have access to all of these, great! If not, there are other ways to design in 3D and get your object printed.
