In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

We'll cover the fundamental building blocks of After Effects in a way that's useful to every student and enthusiast, whether you're interested in become full-time motion graphics designer, starting a new hobby, or even giving creative direction to someone else operating the program.

As a final project, we'll create a lower 3rd, the animated banner that rolls over existing footage to display extra information to viewers, such as a speaker's name or location.

Ready for After Effects? This class is the one to get you started!

First, we'll cover the essential aspects of the software, including how to navigate the interface, understand the tools and windows of the program, and import footage.

Second, we'll learn how to create assets such as text, shapes, masks, vector objects, and more to create visual interest and solid design.

Third, we'll make those assets move. This will include key framing and an introduction to using expressions to automate simple animation properties.

Lastly, we'll cover exporting your project. It's important to share your work!

What You'll Learn

  • Importing and Laying Out Assets. Bring in footage, trim, crop, and color correct. Lay out shapes and text using guidelines.

  • Animating Layers. Make your layers move and introduce some basic animations to properties over time.
  • Editing Text.  Explore the fundamentals of text layers and animations.
  • Adding Embellishments. Blend elements and complete the look of graphics by adding secondary animation and stylistic effects like drop shadows, distortions, and glows.
  • Exporting. Take your animations out of the program and and explore settings for the next potential steps in your workflow.

What You'll Make

You'll learn how to create a lower 3rd to put over existing footage elements. A lower 3rd is the animated banner that rolls over existing footage to display extra information to viewers, such as who is speaking, what they are speaking about, are where they are. This is a great project for beginner students to get a feel for the software and how basic animations are made.

This is class...is one of my favorite...I really like the way he teaches...He is great man ,I also follow him on Youtube. One tip can the next time even show, while doing the record, the button that he press. So even if doesn't tell the shortcut that uses, we can see it anyway... For the rest, Italy thanks Skillshare and even the teacher... thanks a lot

Good basic intro class. This was the first time I opened AE and tried to make anything animate, so though, like some others, I wished I could have done something more snappy right off the bat than lower thirds, realistically, this was a very good way to start.

Great class - I've used after effects for years but I picked up on so many tips from the way he works and got an intro to features I haven't used before. A couple of times while working on a small monitor I got things wrong (the instructor told us to type brackets in an expression, we should type parentheses), and once or twice he moved a little fast while using some short cuts to hide or show certain types of keyframes (hitting p for position keyframes only, hitting u for all active keyframes on a layer), and once the bezier curves in my graph while animating the null out didn't match up with his (fixed with a toggle hold keyframe), but these were minor issues that I was able to overcome quickly with knowledge he taught us earlier in other lessons. This was a handy class and I highly suggest it for anyone looking for an AE primer. The instructor was friendly and fun and clearly knows his stuff. Oh, and you'd be surprised how often a... Oh, and you'd be surprised how often animating lower 3rd graphics comes up in day to day work, so more ideas there is really cool. ;-)

Well-worded, basic class. For the most part, explains everything clearly and at the basis of someone first looking at the software. Even as someone with a long history working in Adobe products, knowing some of the core functionalities was still needed.

Great class as it gets you through the basics of AE. I was, however, a bit put off by the sample used (lower thirds). The teacher has some phenomenal work on his portfolio and I wish he had used some of his more original work to guide through AE. This way, it was a bit boring.

A good class for beginners. It was my first time using After Effects and I'm now comfortable with the layout and capabilities of the program.
