In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

Course Description

I’ve been involved in the world of film since 2007 - acting, directing, producing, writing and teaching. In 2005 I started Rabbit Bandini Productions with my former acting school classmate, Vince Jolivette. Together we’ve produced upwards of 40 films, running the gamut from dramas to comedies; feature-length films to shorts.

Education has played an increasingly important part in my life, having had the opportunity to teach at USC, UCLA, CalArts and NYU. With this Skillshare class, Vince and I will make the lessons we’ve learned in the industry over the last decade accessible to students of any age, anywhere in the world.

This class is definitely geared towards beginners but designed for students of any skill level to find value. Never written for film before? Not a problem, we’ll walk you through our process for getting started.

This class is definitely geared towards beginners but designed for students of any skill level to find value. Never written for film before? Not a problem, we’ll walk you through our process for getting started.

Project. Write a screenplay for an 8-minute short film adapted from one of the source texts listed below. As is the case with screenwriting generally, the most valuable part of this process will be giving and getting feedback on your work from your peers.

Project Reward. Vince and I will review the top 10 most-liked projects and announce our favorite 3 writers, one of whom will receive 1-on-1 feedback on their work from us. Projects need to be submitted by July 24th, 2014 to qualify.

Source Texts. I’ve chosen these texts specifically because they’re all written as vivid portraits or character studies which make for great short film fodder.

  1. The Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters (Free download available)
  2. Winesburg, Ohio: A Group of Tales of Ohio Small-Town Life by Sherwood Anderson
  3. Pastures of Heaven by John Steinbeck

What You'll Learn.

This class will cover a variety of topics spanning the creative to the technical. Some of what we'll touch on includes:

  • Concept Development & Adaptation. Articulating your screenplay vision when adapting from written works.
  • Budgeting for short films. The costs you'll need to keep in mind as you set out to write your screenplay.
  • Screenplay formatting. The intricacies of proper screenplay formatting.
  • Generating loglines and treatments. Pitching your screenplay to resonate with potential investors.

It was a good class. The feedback I received from other students on my screenplay was very insightful. And the videos from James Franco provided very useful information.

This was such an engaging experience. I've never been in an online class where so many students gave their opinion on my work. I really enjoyed reading others work and would recommend this class to anyone regardless of writing experience. The videos were very informative and encouraging!

Thought the class was simple/general enough for beginners, but also packed with some nuggets for more experienced writers as well. Definitely picked up a few valuable pieces of info from both James and Vince.

I loved this class. I could watch the lessons whenever I was available, and the feedback from classmates was super helpful. Also, writing an adapted short screenplay is something I have never attempted before. I enjoyed the challenge!

As apart of my Professional Writing Diploma I studied screenwriting for two years and chose to do this course to refresh my skills. I have learnt so many new things and have noticed a difference between Australian techniques and those from America. A few weeks ago I met James Franco and was able to tell him how much I was enjoying the course but the one thing I've really liked is the strong sense of community. Everybody encourages each other and provides lots of feedback and support.

This class was so informative, interactive and an overall great experience. Even if Vince and/or James don't even look at my piece, the feedback others left on my drafts was extremely beneficial. I highly recommend Skillshare classes and wouldn't hesitate to join another one.

This class was great. The lessons in video with James and Vince were great. Alot of real world information about the movie biz. I loved the challenge of choosing a story and writing something new. The feedback with other classmates was invaluable. They brought so many different critiques that were really helpful. I thought I knew a bit about screenwriting but the feedback was amazing. I would recommend this class for not just beginners but anyone interested in writing.

This is an EXCELLENT class (yes, I am shouting!). Take it, do it, write it. The biggest help for me was learning what a treatment is, how to adapt another writer's work and that we live in a world of so many awesome creative people! Deep gratitude to all involved! yes! Art Saves Lives!

I think this concept is fantastic. I've been writing on my own with no feedback, no help, and no support. It's like joining a party of people with the same goal of improving their craft. The only factor that I’m having difficulty with is navigating the site, which is most likely on me. It’s definitely a big thumbs up for me.

The class offered just what was stated; a very cursory overview for absolute beginners to scriptwriting. A good deal of the information I had already known, but to have it delivered in the manner James Franco delivered it added value to it. You can learn more from a simple three sentence recounting of a personal experience than you can from a whole chapter of 'how-to' in a book. The challenge of an adaptation was invigorating. I would never have on my own chosen to do an adaptation, particularly for a short film, but this forced my hand and I learned even more.

Initially, I thought the class was for beginners. Then, I became acquainted with all the well-crafted writers. I began learning SO much from them that it actually helped my own writing. Skillshare is the perfect name for this site. It does exactly THAT!! Thank you for the experience!!

The lectures are fantastic from both teachers....The only problem I have is choosing which material to write about....reading everything until something inspires me. I think I'm overthinking it.

The short videos are very thought-provoking and deliver a punch of inspiration. Writers will already be familiar with some of the information presented, but even they have a few things to learn. The source texts are INCREDIBLE. This course was worth the money simply due to being INTRODUCED to Spoon River Anthology. I'm very pleased with this course.

Having worked in the entertainment business (comedy) for a considerable period of time, I somehow thought I would inherently know what the screenwriting process would be like. I mean, I watch movies. I've seen numerous scripts. I tell jokes. I'm creative. BUT NO! I don't know JACK. Also, this is my first experience ever drafting a screenplay--let alone an adaptation. So, in a nutshell--I am finding the whole experience informative, instructional and easy to digest. The tutorials are clear and to the point. Also, the support from my fellow (online) classmates has been more than I could've anticipated. I continue to be inspired and moved by the work of all those involved. I'm still in the process of developing and writing and I hope to reveal more...later.

James has a good way of encouraging you to channel your own creativity whereas Vince gives you the low down the technical side of things as well as the whole process.

I've always wanted to dabble in Screenwriting and when I discovered James&Vince; were getting involved in teaching an Online Screenwriting Class for Short Films I was in there! What a great idea - the classes were so insightful, useful and clear that I can't fault it. I can't recall any Screenwriting Classes in or around Belfast so I was delighted when this opportunity came along - AND FOR ONLY $25! Fun FUN!

I said yes but it is qualified to say the least. I like the idea of the class not the execution. This not is a normal class on Skillshare. In other classes, teachers normally give feedback to all students. But because of the celebrity factor and growing number of projects this IMHO has become a writing contest where the prize is feedback from people in the industry. I discovered this knowledge in the discussion threads. Because of the upvoting, people (myself include are spending lots of time) campaigning for Likes to get in the top ten. At this point, new comers are spammed like and follow request to get those likes in kind. The process doesn't reward the best written work as much as it favor those who have been her longer, or good at social media, or willing to put in time to like campaign and give feedback (that is positive). In other word, i believe the evaluation process is flawed. I understand Mr. Franco doesn't want to read a bunch of scripts. Most of the writers here appear to be first timers. According to a MTV article, there are 500 subscribers but I only see 125 projects so the issue is only going to escalate. If the people who normal enter writing contest in droves become aware it will escalate even more. Other contest have readers. If you are going crowd source, I would recommend a rating system with a minimal number of votes to qualify toward the prize or looking at other sites like critters.com or scriptophile to see what they are doing.

I got an email "James Franco wants to read your screenplay." Hooray! \- Great class project, but over 2,000 students turns this into a "Like" and "Upvote" stress fest. \- Revision, "Imagine what it would be like if James Franco and Vince Jolivette read your screenplay." While I imagine them breezing through my screenplay, One Elephant Dreams of Pasture.
