In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

Course Description

This class is an introduction to visual storytelling, open to anyone of any skill level.

Storyboarding is the skill of visually organizing a story - a valuable process for flowing out films, comics, illustrations, business plans or essays. After all, there's a good story woven into every successful project!

What You'll Learn

  • Understanding Storyboarding. What is Storyboarding? How would someone approach it? What are the fundamental tools?
  • Coming Up with Your Story Idea. Coming up with a story that's unique to you and "gutsy" in some way.
  • Researching Your Subject. You'll be asked to find pictures, documents or any other source of information that'll offer inspiration on your subject.
  • Exploring and Structuiring Your Ideas. You'll produce a blueprint of your story in its simplest form.
  • Executing Your Ideas. Draft your storyboard in a way that communicates your story exactly how you'd like.

What You'll Make

You'll use the project guide I designed to storyboard a story from your life - anything from a favorite childhood memory to something that happened on the way to work this morning.

As a story artist at Walt Disney Studios, storyboarding is what I do (and love) daily.

This course offered a lot of the basic ideas of creating a storyboard that I needed. I worked on my first comic storyboard while doing this class and there were many tips offered by the teacher that I did not find in the class I go to.

This class was great to learn about storytelling: how to structure a story, which information to prioritize, how to express emotions. A lot of useful information and advices. It is not so much about sketching skills and techniques.

I started this course hoping to get to know how to do a storyboard properly. I was so satisfied with the course that my project became an actual short film currently in production.

Thanks so much Leo. You have given me more confidence to tackle storyboards for a personal short film project. Explaining visual language was really helpful too.

Really cool to see how the stuff (theoritical + examples) covered at the beginning of the class are applied and come to life in an actual example. Magical!

If you're looking for a strong foundational understanding of storyboarding and visual storytelling, this is a great course. Just be aware that this class is heavily designed toward teaching fundamental concepts, so you won't get a lot of tool-specific techniques and tricks. As a side note, I would love to see a course from Leo specifically covering illustration (hint, hint). :-)

Great class! To the point, with good video and write ups. What others will charge you 2K for and drag it out 6 months, Leo does for the modest amount of $20 and with amazing clarity. Kudos.

I've only checked out the first 2 parts of the class and Mr. Matsuda seems to have a lot of passion for his subject and seems to know how to balance mainstream humor with the personal side of himself very well. I can't wait to check out the rest of the lessons soon as the first 2 are very clear and he knows how to get out what he wants to see in each lesson very clearly. (I will update this when I finish the class).

I like the peer feedback, the fact that it's project based and the way the video classes are set up, you learn at your own pace. I will definitely keep an eye for more and recommend this one to anybody interested in storyboarding! Keep up the awesome work, Skillshare!
