In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

Gain efficiency, quality, and style in your custom digital lettering, and create a piece that brings you joy and pride! This start-to-finish class with designer Brandon Rike is perfect for designers, illustrators, and enthusiasts eager to create stand-out digital lettering in Adobe Illustrator.

You will learn to manipulate an existing font into an interesting lettering piece. While the awareness of quality lettering continues to gain steam, it is important for designers to go the extra mile in their work, and create custom type and lettering to add more character to their composition. With the fast-paced nature of most projects, it is important to know the skills necessary to quickly create this style of type.

Key lessons include:

  • Sketching The Possibilities. First, you will sketch several variations of the word, understanding each letter’s relationship to the other. You'll explore possible alternates and swashes that can complement the overall composition.
  • Selecting The Right Font. Second, you will learn to select fonts that will lend themselves to alterations. You’ll learn the key attributes of a font that is easily customizable.
  • Building The Word. Third, you will work inside Adobe Illustrator to bring the sketches to life. You will learn the key tools to use that will help to get the piece done quickly, with attention to kerning and spacing, unity across the piece, and overall legibility.
  • Finishing Touches. And finally, you will learn some of the finishing touches and embellishments that can be done on a lettering piece. From texture to dimension, you will learn tiny tricks that will make your lettering piece stand out.

In the project for this class, you will make a custom lettering piece in Adobe Illustrator for a word of your choosing. You will select your own font, based on the notes and resources outlined in section two, and explore the relationships between the letters using the appropriate tools in Illustrator.

Creating custom lettering is imperative to a graphic designer’s success in the design industry. As the popularity and awareness of good lettering continues to grow, designers must take a little more care in the words and letters in their piece. Gone are the days of typing a word out and leaving it untouched. Designers must learn to create interesting lettering pieces, and know how to do create it and master it quickly and with high quality!

Nice class, everything is clear but it would have been nice to have 2 or 3 more examples, maybe with other font families.

This class was amazing. Concise, helpful, and REAL. So often when I learn about how pro graphic designers work (I'm a student), I come away feeling like either 1) "I never could do that" or 2) "I will never have time to do that." After finishing this class, I'm actually inspired to learn how to work with custom type in an efficient way instead of discouraged about how little I know. Probably the best class I've taken on Skillshare yet.

I thought the class was short and sweet..! Brandon moves quickly so, if you are new to Ai then you probably will have to watch some parts more than once.

Great class. I love how he explains his thinking process when working. newbies to illustrator may get lost a few places because he forgot to state he is holding down alt but otherwise a great class.

This is a pretty good class with some good techniques, however I wish that he would have recorded his computer screen for the close up shots instead of using another camera. It's hard to follow along with some of the intricacies of the course this way.

A great class and a helpful, clear teacher. However, one annoyance for me was how the camera just filmed his computer screen (glossy reflections and all) rather than doing what most tutorials/online classes do and show an actual screen recording of what was happening. Luckily, I already knew how to use Illustrator and Photoshop pretty well already, but for those who didn't know what he was talking about I'm sure it was difficult to watch and learn what he was doing. Other than that, a great class!

I learned things in this class that my design degree didn't give me. Really awesome insights into how to achieve a great type design through both an aesthetic point of view as well the technical side of things.

While I think definitely learned a few tricks from this class, I wish that a larger percentage of the video was of the screen. I feel like I missed some of the key things because the video was of his face and not the screen for the majority of the class. Other than that, it was a nice intro level exploration of lettering in Illustrator with rectilinear fonts. Thanks for the class!

I liked what I learned in this class, but the format of showing the information (a video camera on a computer monitor) made it really hard to see what was being clicked. I definitely don't feel like I got everything that was being said. But the information I did get was good and the advice was sound.

Great class! I learned some cool techniques and shortcuts I didn't know about before. Also liked that it was one of the only classes I have taken that I could complete in one sitting. Brandon was knowledgable and to the point. Fun, quick and easy class. I def recommend.

This is a rather quick class, really easy to get into, and full of practical, substantial information. Once you've picked up Brandon's approach, you should be able to push on, and really start cranking out some great typography.

The course was super positive and quick. I really appreciated the candor of the teacher. Very authentic and approachable. The class and design process took me maybe 4 hours in all. Practical design thinking and processes are hard to come by, this satisfies both those boxes for me.

I've been a fan of Brandon's work for a while now, and immediately leapt at the opportunity to learn something from him. The class is concise and to the point, giving each step just the amount of attention it needs. Each step is explained in such a way that even those with very little understanding of Illustrator will be able to follow along easily, while not being dull to those already fluent in Adobe's programs. I'd definitely recommend the class.

Great class, I absolutely recommend it to everyone who is interested in creating a custom type. I had a lot of fun and felt i got the joy back with working with type in illustrator after a hiatus for about 2 years. Every step is explained in a very easy way and you get both technical and creative advice with the process.

Great class. Fun to watch a master designer at work and picked up lots of shortcuts and methods that I will definitely be using. I would love to take some advanced lettering courses from Brandon. It would have been nice to watch his actual screen (rather then camera cropping in on his design) to see all the tools that he used as he used them, but it still works.
