In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

  • Concept Development. You'll brainstorm concepts and create sketches for 2-3 designs.
  • Initial Design and Illustration. You'll create your design with a final product in mind, such as a screen print, digital graphic, or album cover.
  • Final Design and Typography. We'll show you how to add finishing touches to your design and cover typographic elements.

What You'll Make

You'll start by selecting a subject for you poster design (can be a real event or let your imagination run wild). We'll then take you through our process of brainstorming and solidifying 2-3 solid ideas that will make it to the sketch phase. Based on sketches, you'll select a final concept and design for your poster and get work. Based on your chosen style, you'll have the option to jump right into the computer or begin illustrating on paper. You'll share your final design (or design in progress) to receive feedback from your peers.

We'll also be sharing design resources and provide examples from our own portfolio as well as cover how client feedback can make or break your project and how to keep your design on track.

The course teaches you steps that designer has to take while approaching the project of making a poster. DKNG shares the sources where they get inspiration and also cover some technical stuff on printing and creating halftone texture for the final image. I would definitely recommend it!

This was a greatly informative and educational class. I've been designing concert advertising posters for a couple years now, and I learned a few new tricks in this class. I also gained from their guided approach to the design process; things that I can apply to more than just poster design projects. Keep up the good work DKNG!

It was awesome to get feedback and tips from DKNG themselves, as well as participate in a class full of talented artists and illustrators. The process that was used to progress students through coursework was excellent -- it was a real joy to get to see how two of my favorite illustrators work their craft. I got a lot out of it and it's definitely helped me expand my personal skills as an illustrator.

While it was cool to see into the world of DKNG, I can honestly say that I learned next to nothing. I usually consider a class worth it if I pick up a trick or tip, but the majority of this class is focused on their design process and lacks A LOT of depth. Don't expect to learn any secrets here. Still love their work, however I'm left disappointed.

This class was a total joy to participate in. The class is for the most part self-directed and like most forms of social media, you get out of it what you put into it. What's remarkable about it is how open and helpful the teachers were with student critiques, not to mention how transparent they are about their own processes and techniques during class hours as well as how concentrated the topic is in a digital classroom setting. There is a wealth of information and experience to be had here, especially if you're into design, illustration, or screenprinting. So if you're the kind of person who likes to take it upon themselves to create cool things, you enjoy learning and sharing with others, and you're into visual art and music, I highly recommend taking this class.

This class was seriously awesome. Dan and Nathan were enormously helpful, I learned a lot, and also just had a blast. It was also awesome to see all the different bands people chose and see their sound come to life in people's posters. Also the support and feedback between people taking the course was really supportive and great. HIGHLY recommend.

Dan and Nathan were incredibly forthcoming with their process and behind the scenes info on how they do what they do. They took the time to answer pretty much everything that was asked of them, gave great feedback and critiques to the over 300 student projects submitted, and still took the time to film and edit the pre-recorded lecture material (which, in my opinion, was a way better way to go than live lectures). I am so glad to have had the chance to learn from them and pick their brain a bit. I'd definitely recommend the course if they were to offer it again.

I felt the class was great and provided some wonderful insights into the design process that is not so easily accessed. It helped me be more mindful of the design choices I made and also analyze what my content was was going to be before I just started to put pen to paper or pixel to screen. My only critique of the class is that I felt some people got a more fair assessment of their projects than others. I also understand that due to the sheer volume of the peers involved this is also an unrealistic concern. Overall great class. DKNG is top shelf. I hope they do another class in the near future.

If you know anything about DKNG you know that they are at the top of the level when it comes to gig posters, silk screening, etc. They may not agree with that statement but they've arrived at a good point in their careers. The class is great! They are more than willing to share their knowledge and process with the class and do a good job at providing feedback, answering questions, and being helpful. Loved the class!

I was really really excited to take this class, but I think it was just too large. I saw DKNG commenting on peoples projects many times over, but they never got to me and it really made the whole thing not worth it. I only had 1 comment on my project the entire time, and it may have been that my work wasn't good enough- but it would have been nice to get feed back from other people, but there were just too many projects to go through. There was no motivation to continue when no one cared and you saw the instructors going to everyone but you. The Skillshare people looked like they were trying to help, but the only video chat we had scheduled I waited the entire hour for someone else to come on, but no one did. I was just all around disappointed because I really love DKNG's work and I was excited to learn something from them and get some feedback from them, or at least others and it didn't work out that way. I think they should have capped it out around 40 people so that they had time to really communicate with everyone, and if it went well, host more.

It was great to see behind the scenes on how DKNG does what they do, from the creative to the technical. They took the time to offer feedback on student projects, which added a personal touch that was both constructive and encouraging. I've already recommended this class to many of my design and artist friends.
