In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

Course Description

In this class you will learn my tips, tricks and mantras for running a business, inspired by Biggie's Crack Commandments . These include:

  • Management skills
  • Enabling ideas
  • Refining your personal brand

One of the most important lessons I have learned through two decades of building my own businesses is that wisdom and guidance can be found in the most unlikely of places. As a result, I've structured this Skillshare class on my principles of business around the legendary hip-hop track "Ten Crack Commandments" by Biggie Smalls. On the surface it would appear that Biggie is rapping about illegal drug sales, but the knowledge dropped in this song actually applies to all businesses no matter the industry.

This class is for anyone from a young entrepreneur venturing into your first business endeavor to an experienced CEO running a company with thousands of employees. Trust me, you will all take away some...

A lot of the classes on Skillshare have detailed project steps, actionable items, and you steadily progress on something through the course of the class. This isn't one of those. If you're looking for a great speech - one that's novel and honest - about really top-level business recommendations, then this is it. If you're expecting something that's more like a course, then this isn't it.

I L.O.V.E.D. this! I, too, have always been a huge fan of Mr. Christopher Wallace and have long-appreciated the wisdom found in this tune. Mr. Ecko takes us deeper by exhuming and extrapolating the deeper, hidden messages of Mr. Big's Ten Commandments. I've listened to this song for years and I'm familiar w/the lyrics, yet I believe I still took quite a bit away from this short lesson. I've found myself repeating (in my head) what Mark when I become distracted from my goal. What can I say? I love Biggie Smalls and now I'm a fan of Mark Ecko's. I didn't once feel pressured to buy his book. Accept the class for what it is, take what you can from it . . . I loved it.

There's some real gems in here. Good ideas that have come from honest, old- fashioned thought, away from the buzz of fragmented social media.

I'm neutral on this class. The guy is clearly knowledgeable but it's difficult to take is advice into action items or quick wins. I thought with a title like "Run Your Own Business," there would be more substance. It's not really a class as much as a speech from the founder of Eckō.

I heard of creating a statement, business philosophy or a vision/mission before. But I think this is a great way to create something meaningful lasting to share and will help me live my life by. I am really excited to create my own presentation like this.

Not that Mark Ecko doesn't bring a thorough business application to the classic 10 Commandments of Crack, but I walk away from this class feeling like I've heard this all in different places already and that Mark just offers his own personal slant on some fairly surface level business advice. If you're seeking something more in-depth than "don't micro-manage" you might be better served elsewhere.

This isn't really a course. Rather, it is a 30 minute lecture that pulls lessons from a rap song and applies them to running a business. A better use of your time would be to read Ecko's book (which this 'course' feels like it is simply marketing for).

Everyone loves the teacher who uses a non-traditional method of relaying traditional information. In this class, Ecko is the archetypal "awesome teacher", relaying his business fundamentals using a cool frame of reference. It was fun and funny and interesting and charming. I'm glad I took the class, and I'd recommend it to others.

Dope course! Marc has done an incredible job of keeping his message relevant by looking at business principles through the lens of Biggie's Crack Commandments. If you haven't already, buy the book and sign up for the course! Not only will you learn some incredible lessons from Marc, but the lessons you learn from your peers in the class are absolutely amazing. That inspiration makes this course beyond worth it.
