In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

If you are a beginner, there are some key learnings like emphasizing the down stroke and the importance of layout preparation. It doesn't, however, really cover how to letter. I will want to take another class that shows that. Also the instructor's hair was in the way often of seeing what she was doing.

Really good class, it was nice to hear about the importance of ideas and concepts. Something that as a designer I sometimes overlook if I get too excited about the execution.

Thanks a lot for this course, so clear to follow your advices. Is it possible to add another lesson to show how to concretely digitize and customize on illustrator ? It could be great to conclude entirely the learning.

The class was very educational on the specific process of hand lettering and the tools required. Mary Kate McDevitt was wonderful when going through her mental process and the way she thinks about producing a beautiful outcome.

*Yes, I would recommend this class. It was a fun, creative exercise. My review is not a criticism of the instructor, rather, it is a reflection of my own expectations going into the class.* The pros: It introduces sketching tools, some tips on strokes, and basic ways to research for inspiration/concepts which hopefully shouldn't seem unfamiliar to anyone ever having to do anything creative - but nonetheless it's a good reminder. The cons: As a beginner, I was looking for the nitty gritty on how to form letters. I needed information on digitizing my work. This class offers neither. Instead, we watch the instructor expertly whip out her own work without much understanding on our part as to how she did the actual lettering - but all the same we are admonished to "practice". Practice what? The results: You will not feel overwhelmed by this class if you don't hold out for perfection in your work. The instructor has a friendly manner, and the assignment is one anybody can grasp. It's fun to watch her project take shape. You'll be able to complete the course breaking very little sweat and can use any learned skills in future endeavors. You will not, however, be much of a lettering expert. That will either have to come from another Skillshare class or a textbook, or an actual classroom experience.

I am loving this class! She has presented so many methods for adding discipline to increase the level of creativity in my art. My favorite part so far was the list of common mistakes in lettering and the warm up exercises. I have appreciated the valuable resources she provides with each lesson and feel like they will keep helping me down the road.

I've learned quite a lot by watching the introductory videos. Mary Kate McDevitt does a fantastic job of explaining the tools she uses, how she finds phrases to use, how she creates her lettering ideas, and then how she carries them out.

Loved it. It was great getting insights on process and refining it's a good refresher for current designers, like myself, and a great beginners course for those who've never tried lettering before.

Great class, good start to lettering. I do wish she would have covered the vectorizing process, or at least given some insight as to how what she was doing on paper was going to effect the digitizing process (i.e. why she was tracing the overlapping portions separately.) Definitely very helpful class watching all the same.
