The big picture: the class is structured to teach you the four building-blocks of modern marketing and the 50+ terms that support them. With this conceptual frame and vocabulary firmly in place, you’ll be able to define the scope, function, and action items of a smart, effective, 21st-century marketing plan. I promise: this is fun work. We’ll talk a lot about famous brands as well as your own. I believe in tactics that are both strategic and practical.

Also included: original ebooks, reformatted classics, video interviews, and more. In total, it’s just over 2 hours of video content and 50+ pages of original supplemental readings and worksheets. I’ve designed it not to be daunting, but to be comprehensive and rewarding.

Be proactive about making this class work for you. If you enroll solo, connect with students in the Skillshare discussion forums, posting your work and sharing feedback. If you enroll with colleagues, schedule team check-ins and lunch meetings to discuss your learning.

What You'll Do

The outcome is not a boring business plan. It’s your detailed plan (with a calendar) on how you will do work that matters and how you will spread the word about it. Your project is about developing a point of view and learning to tell a story that resonates. It'll be crucial to give and get feedback from your classmates in order to incorporate new perspectives and ideas into your plan.

Project: Create a modern marketing plan for your business or favorite brand.

Brief: You'll use the modern marketing lessons from this class to apply the Action Theory of Marketing and create a plan for your business or favorite brand. To translate the key concepts from the lessons into your project, be sure your marketing plan includes the following 6 components:  

  1. Describe the business or brand you’re marketing.
  2. Answer 11 questions to clarify your role as marketer. 
  3. Prioritize 3 P's to be the backbone of your marketing plan. 
  4. Identify top concepts you'll use to move through Emotion, Change, Alert & Share from your audience.
  5. Articulate your marketing point of view. What do you stand for? What are you trying to accomplish? 
  6. Tell the story you'll use to seduce your tribe and start your movement. Your story can be written, visual or both.

Being a direct response copywriter, I always wondered what Seth thought about our craft. I've always respected his opinion and have assumed that he'd frown on many of the practices some direct response copywriters use. I've never heard him talk so candidly about direct marketing as he does in this course. He's a voice of reason many direct marketing people need to hear in order to evolve with the web.

Excellent content, and really helpful for me as an entrepreneur, lots on my plate, and no real training in marketing. Seth Godin's online information was very comprehensive, informative, and structured in a way that I could use it and get a lot of benefit from the course.

I LOVED IT! This course (and The New Business Toolbox - I think of them as a set) is perfect - clear, riveting, entertaining, useful, applicable, productive, helpful, inspiring, flexible, meaningful. I've been talking about both courses nonstop and encouraging my friends, peers and students to take them. I have tried and given up on business time and time again, but here is a course that ignites my soul! Seth is talking about making something meaningful, and connecting to other people - however that makes sense to you. This is a beautiful approach that reaches well beyond marketing - this embraces life! Seth gets it. He really gets it, and he makes it really clear. This is a fantastic course - I totally recommend it.

Really thought-provoking class. I enjoyed the way the class was broken up into small video segments with the opportunity to work through the project in steps. I'm going to go back through it again and I think it will help to take a second pass over the content and revise my plan.

Fantastic course, and at this cost, I could not click the buy button fast enough. I've been lusting after a few different online 'intro to marketing' type courses but just couldn't justify spending thousands of dollars at this point in time. So imagine my extreme joy to come across this (practically free!) one, taught by Seth Godin who is a regular presence on my bookshelf. Amazing deal, and tons of insights gained!

Seth is a genius...no disputing that. This class was SO worth the 19 bucks, money well spent. I already had a background in marketing and advertising (Old School) and really needed to to readjust my mind to the new way to get people to purchase a product.

A course on marketing which provides probably 1000x the value it costs if you go through it seriously. It is great to finally be able learn in detail how Seth thinks about marketing. I would recommend this to anybody who serious about business or their craft, regardless of their experience.

Time is a hot commodity. So is wisdom and education by Seth. This course is worth more than money can buy. I plan to go through it again because it's so valuable, not just the first go-around, but as an annual check-up.

I have found this class to be amazing and of real practical use in understanding and planning the marketing for my start-up. It also changes how you see the world; you start to notice good and bad marketing all around you. Seth is right though when he says that you get the most out of it when you do it with someone else. I've been doing this with my co-founder and it has been great. We first watch one of the short videos on our own, to enjoy and understand, then plan a time to discuss it. Just before the discussion we watch it again, thinking how it applies to us. Then the real value happens as we spend 1 or 2 hours discussing the points Seth has made and how they apply to what we are doing. These discussions are a pleasure and we are making step- by-step progress to our marketing plan and a shared world view for the future of our start-up.

The Modern Marketing Workshop was great. I was curious about marketing and I wanted a better understanding of how marketing works. I was receiving marketing spam from various marketers via social networks and emails requesting to provide a service for a fee. I prefer to learn something and then figure out how I can apply it to my life. This class has provided me with a good foundation to be creative with my own ideas rather than just pay someone to do it for me. I never heard of Seth Godin prior to enrolling in this class. Since I've completed the class I've went on to discover more of Seth's work the book "Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?” This class was well worth it to me and confirmation that I'm on the right track. Thank you Seth and Skillshare for such a great class.

I devoured this course and rewatched each lesson at least once. Seth's knowledge about Marketing and the human nature behind desire is enlightened. I've falled a little more in love with Seth Godin that I already was. The video quality was crisp and clear, the sound was great. This is so well thought out. I would have paid $700 for this course. This is a must learn for anyone in marketing and media.

This class is incredibly helpful. I walked away from the class with a more clear perception of marketing and its nuts and bolts. In the past I have shied away from marketing because as the recipient of mass marketing campaigns, I could not see how to create a plan that was personal and meaningful. This class gave me the tools to see how this can be done and how, in fact, to be successful, a clear, concise, personal plan is necessary.
