The big picture: the class is structured to teach you the four building-blocks of modern marketing and the 50+ terms that support them. With this conceptual frame and vocabulary firmly in place, you’ll be able to define the scope, function, and action items of a smart, effective, 21st-century marketing plan. I promise: this is fun work. We’ll talk a lot about famous brands as well as your own. I believe in tactics that are both strategic and practical.

Also included: original ebooks, reformatted classics, video interviews, and more. In total, it’s just over 2 hours of video content and 50+ pages of original supplemental readings and worksheets. I’ve designed it not to be daunting, but to be comprehensive and rewarding.

Be proactive about making this class work for you. If you enroll solo, connect with students in the Skillshare discussion forums, posting your work and sharing feedback. If you enroll with colleagues, schedule team check-ins and lunch meetings to discuss your learning.

What You'll Do

The outcome is not a boring business plan. It’s your detailed plan (with a calendar) on how you will do work that matters and how you will spread the word about it. Your project is about developing a point of view and learning to tell a story that resonates. It'll be crucial to give and get feedback from your classmates in order to incorporate new perspectives and ideas into your plan.

Project: Create a modern marketing plan for your business or favorite brand.

Brief: You'll use the modern marketing lessons from this class to apply the Action Theory of Marketing and create a plan for your business or favorite brand. To translate the key concepts from the lessons into your project, be sure your marketing plan includes the following 6 components:  

  1. Describe the business or brand you’re marketing.
  2. Answer 11 questions to clarify your role as marketer. 
  3. Prioritize 3 P's to be the backbone of your marketing plan. 
  4. Identify top concepts you'll use to move through Emotion, Change, Alert & Share from your audience.
  5. Articulate your marketing point of view. What do you stand for? What are you trying to accomplish? 
  6. Tell the story you'll use to seduce your tribe and start your movement. Your story can be written, visual or both.

A course packed with thought provoking ideas that really guide you in asking the right questions for marketing in today's world and in today's economy. I would take any course Seth Godin would offer (Ok, maybe not one on canoeing, though I believe that is another one of his specialties besides marketing) :) It's a real luxury to have his thoughts and ideas at my fingertips and to be able to go over them again to be able to really think them through. This was terrific. Stumbled across the course in an email mention by MailChimp. Have read Seth from time to time for a long time. About to launch a web business, (I'm 60 by the way...) and figured I could use some sage advice. I hope my access to review this material won't disappear 48 hours from now because I want to review these gems in the future. This was >very< encouraging. Here be wisdom.

If your marketing is not getting you the results you want, it may be because you are still marketing in a "Mad Men" style. Marketing has changed. Seth Godin is a wonderful and clear instructor. The exercises will make you think differently. I have no doubt that the results you are looking to achieve will occur if you follow the lessons and do the exercises provided in this course.

This short course delivers insight, intelligent thinking and encouragement to deconstruct and reconfigure your business out of all proportion to its modest cost. And it doesn't make these things any easier, which is good.

Seth's insights are like breaths of fresh air in a smoggy, densely populated space called marketing. I believe he actually says it best in one of the videos when he says, "These ideas are simple, yet deep and complex." He has a way of taking the deep and complex and making them simple to understand, and simple to apply.

This is the first Skillshare workshop I signed up and participated in... and what a bargain! I have been a Seth Godin "fan" for many years: regularly read his blog, read all his books and have even taken a full-day seminar with him-- and I got a good deal from this workshop. This class definitely over-delivers. There is wealth of information here--a lot more wealth, than the $19 price tag. Steve Gelman

This class is amazing. I've been watching it while also reading Sinek's "Start with Why" and together they have completely changed my marketing plan and my marketing message going forward. The videos of Seth speaking are great quality, and the assignments, links, attachments, etc. are very helpful. I expect to watch the whole course through and perform the exercises at least one more time (maybe two more times) so that I can really absorb all of the lessons being taught. My favorite videos are the case studies at the end where Seth speaks to two separate individuals from two different businesses, and simply goes through the process of figuring out what the marketing approach could be for their products.

I always learn something new when I hear Seth speak (or read). There are nuggets in here no matter the business you're in. Here are a couple of nuggets I picked up... 1) the POM story of giving someone MORE than they can use (if it's quality) will "force" them to share it with others 2) Check open rates on newsletters (common sense but I'd never really thought about it) 3) "Give" in your newsletters way more than try to sell what you do... it builds TRUST and nothing is more important than TRUST.

I read an email with the heads up seth Godin was providing a marketing course. With no hesitation I opened the links and was hopeful it was an on-line course. I was astounded at the extremely affordable investment and booked in and paid without even looking at course details. I'm taking my time with the program and viewing the videos several times and working through the answers. I decided not to join a group as Im testing out the concepts on a job that I'm in not a personal business. For me this is about the learnings. so I can really grasp the philosophy and continue to apply to many future projects and in business. I will create a little group here locally to work at a higher level in the near future. I greatly appreciate the work that has been put into developing the workshop that at first glance appears simple in structure but with the depth that only Seth could deliver. This class may be the most important class you have the good fortune to be able to access. The science of Marketing has changed. It is high time all Marketers changed with it. Corporate, Entrepreneur, Solo, no matter how you fly, you should fly in as fast as you can.

Awesome course. It is great that Seth Godin is personally answering questions in the first week of this class.To get the most benefit, doing the exercises and project is key ( I am still working on these). Participating in a group and in the online discussions are also great ways to practice what we learned as well as see different ideas and points of view.

I devoured this class in two days and cannot wait to get started now on my project. I work in media and marketing for a living but had so many aha moments while going through these modules. This class is absolutely fantastic! Yes, I've known about all of the concepts before, but this was a real kick-in-the-pants to systematically apply them to my business. The class is structured in a very practical way: Basic framework, unpacking core concepts, then applying it to your project. I recommend watching through the videos once, then watch parts of them again more in-depth as you think through how each idea applies to you. It's a fantastic value: Whether you want a quick refresher, or (ideally) want someone to guide you through thinking about a specific problem, this is as good as it gets without hiring an in-person consultant. Seth: BIG fan of your work. Please, please make more of these classes! Thanks!
