In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

This fast-moving class features hands-on, strategic and practical tactics every small businessperson ought to consider as she sets out to grow her business.

If you're going to put in the time and the money and the energy to turn your project into a business that matters, it pays to get these seven things right.

Author Seth Godin doesn't often get the chance to share this sort of nuts and bolts practical advice, and you're invited to join in...

  • The Business Model. This isn't a tool, it's the entire backbone of the project. What is the process that turns your resources and your effort into value and profit?
  • Freelancing vs Entrepreneurship. Are you trying to build something bigger than yourself?  The problem with hiring the cheapest, smartest person to work for you is that you end up with two jobs, and you won't be good at either.
  • Funding. Is there a way to raise money for your kind of project? We'll explore the obvious options but put an emphasis on effective but little-talked about alternatives. Learn about equity, debt, royalties, and perhaps best of all, bootstrapping.
  • Hiring. Who to look for and how to find and retain them. For many entrepreneurs, outsourcing isn't a way just to save money, it's a new way to grow and thrive.
  • Naming. A simple and powerful approach to picking a name that works. We'll talk about domains, scalability and trademarks
  • Partnerships. Ringo was the luckiest Beatle, We'll go into detail about how to split the pie while thinking hard about the long run
  • Cash Flow. This is the essence of small-business security. More than just about anything else, the idea of funding your business with your customers' support is completely transformative.
  • Positioning and Storytelling. The power of stories that stick. How your story changes your strategy, your marketing, your pricing and more. Understanding the x/y analysis.

The theme of this class is simple but surprising: You should build your business around ideas that work, as opposed to building a business and then insisting that the universe cooperate in helping you succeed. Seven simple concepts well understood can change everything.

What You'll Do

By the time you're done with this class, you'll have created a seven-part leverage plan. Not a boring business plan, this is your focused, detailed plan on how things that already work in the world will be put to work by you on your business.

This isn't a complete MBA and it's not focused on art or the resistance. What it is: a ready-to-roll 7-part top-level course for smart entrepreneurs and those that aspire to be.

What I like about Seth–no pretense, no bs. Just great, tried and true information. My entire business concept, one that I was well attached to, changed and it is so much smarter now. So grateful Seth does what he does!

I LOVED IT! This course (and Modern Marketing - I think of them as a set) is perfect - clear, riveting, entertaining, useful, applicable, productive, helpful, inspiring, flexible, meaningful. I've been talking about both courses nonstop and encouraging my friends, peers and students to take them. I have tried and given up on business time and time again, but here is a course that ignites my soul! Seth is talking about making something meaningful, and connecting to other people - however that makes sense to you. This is a beautiful approach that reaches well beyond marketing - this embraces life! Seth gets it. He really gets it, and he makes it really clear. This is a fantastic course - I totally recommend it.

Short course that centers in on some of the basics that you may have wanted to forget when starting your new business (such as funding and partnerships). The distinction between an entrepreneur and a freelancer is a good one to keep in mind.

I am a first-time entrepreneur (in the traditional sense) in the very early stages of developing a new business. This class was perhaps the most valuable investment of time I have made so far. I completed the course, including all of the exercises in approximately at 6-10 hours. Seth provides excellent advice, his exercises forced me to think through important aspects of my new business in innovative ways, and the resources he offered led to other great guidance and ideas (such as Streak.com for hiring and CRM). Most importantly, it left me feeling more excited, inspired, and confident than when I started. If you already have good business sense then this course will likely affirm your capabilities while opening your mind to new possibilities, potential pitfalls/common mistakes, and ways to do build your enterprise smarter and faster. Its a decent class if you would like to join or start a business. It contains some great insight details that general Business books tend to overlook. The course is short and delivered with reference to the real world, which Seth is a great advocate for. So why not give it ago?

Seth Godin always has a way of delivering content that is precise, relevant and to the point no matter what he shares. I love his style of delivery and this class delivers everything you'd expect from Seth and a little more. There are several golden nuggets to take from the skillshare class.

There are so many things to think about when starting a business. This class makes sure that you don't forget anything. It's great for me as a creative because I don't have all the business know how. This course got me to look at things in a different way. It made it practical.

Great class indeed. I think that the material taught is absolutely excellent and very clear but I think that the course could work on its class titles and distribution to make it more exciting to complete. (for example, don't call a chapter "cashflow", but maybe "how to avoid the cash trap", or make the positioning chapter the first chapter as it is easy, exciting and motivating to imagine your business in an uncharted territory without competition.)
