In Skillshare’s unique philosophy, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is a learner. Rather than a traditional lecture format, courses are offered within a global online learning community in which learners collaborate and learn by doing. Instructors are industry leaders who share their skills with anyone who wants to learn. No credits are offered. Founded by online entrepreneurs Michael Karnjanaprakorn and Malcolm Ong, Skillshare’s online “campus” was launched in April 2011. Its catalog has grown from 15 to more than 250 online courses that cover creative arts, entrepreneurship, branding and marketing, lifestyle and technology. The School of MakeOurMark, with courses in photography, illustration and tattooing, was launched in October 2013, and the School of Design went live the following month. Among the instructors who have taught courses are Seth Godin, founder of online marketing firm Yoyodyne, who teaches a class on entrepreneurship; DJ Young Guru, who leads a course on mixing and recording; and actor, writer and director James Franco, whose course focuses on screenwriting for short films. You can begin a Skillshare collaboration by taking an introductory course in a particular area to learn, for example, the fundamentals of Photoshop and expand your knowledge with a five-part, in-depth Photoshop series.

Ellen Lupton's book, Thinking with Type, was sitting in Amazon wishlist for a while and when I saw that she's teaching a course on Skillshare, I enrolled almost immediately. Through a series of exercises Ellen shows to create amazing designs with just typography. She explains how to compose typographic elements and how to pick and pair fonts. I will definitely buying the book after watching this course.

Great simple introduction to type and design. We followed along on a simple project. I started with a better-than-average understanding of typefaces and design and I came away with a better understanding. Great to outstanding!

Fantastic short class which provides information about the different types of typefaces, as well as some historical context. The exercises provided are clear and thoughtful to the content and there are many other inspiring projects shown. Highly recommend as an introduction to typography.

I have had the great fortune of stumbling up on Ellen Lupton's books Graphic Design Thinking and Thinking With Type, two great publications with amazing kernels of knowledge. Hearing Ellen talk about her process and her line of thought behind great use of type has been extremely illuminating.

I'm not a designer and I knew nothing about typography before taking this class. It was interesting and I now can better approach making a good business card with my future clients in mind, rather than just what I like. Thanks!

A *fantastic* class. Ellen Lupton is a wonderful, knowledgeable teacher with an easygoing and thorough approach to her material. I've read her typography book and this only adds to it. More from Ellen Please! Well paced, well recorded and complete.

One of the best things about this class is you get a good walk through of some very excellent fonts to incorporate into your design work. I have always wondered why certain fonts were praised the way they were and this was a good answer to those questions. It's more of a history class than anything else, but it mentions briefly about proper grid use and a few other things. Ellen has a published book dealing with type I believe, so she was a great teacher.

Dr. Lupton helps her students understand the beauty of typography and learn the foundations of type. This approach will guide contemporary graphic artists to paving the future by understanding our textual past. Plus you get to design your own business card, and that's really cool.

I am a beginner in the world of design and although I liked the class because it got me out of my comfort zone and I do recommend it, I thought it was a little too much on the theory side with no tutorial whatsoever on how to proceed to modify type, play in illustrator, etc. I feel many other classes have excellent and lengthy tutorials in addition to fun projects which make them a better class than this one. All in all, this is a class where you will learn the theory of typography. You're on your own to learn the rest. (I'm fine with that, I just had different expectations when I bought the class)

I RECOMMEND THIS TO EVERYONE! I'm taking some skillshare classes for kicks and I forgot about this Ellen Lupton class I signed up for last year. It's a class geared towards redesigning your business card (though, you don't have to design anything), but it's really just a bunch of informational videos about typography. It's everything I already know from design school, but it's nice to hear it all again—and from someone whose books were my textbooks (I mean, hello!... "Thinking with Type" and "Mixing Messages"... still in my library!). Oh, did I mention THE CLASS IS FREE!? I'd recommend this to everyone, even those who *aren't* graphic designers because, let's face it... we know you commit type crimes on a daily basis and it's about type you stop violating our eyes. Ha! Just kidding... well, not really. It's very informative and will help you when you're creating your DIY invites or what-have-you. Please, please consider taking it. It... As someone that has already studied typography, it was really good just to take a step back and refresh the memory on some of the basics. I would recommend this to any starting-out designers, such as those that are about to enter, or have just entered their first year of design studies - or even those that just wish to give their documents a more professional look.
