Course Description

Digging Deeper: Making Manuscripts introduces you to the study of early text technologies, focusing principally on the medieval book, but covering other textual objects, too, such as scrolls and diplomata. The Digging Deeper team of scholars from Stanford and Cambridge reveals how to investigate manuscripts within repository settings and through online resources, what to look out for when confronted with manuscript images, and how to exploit all the information a manuscript offers. You will learn major characteristics of book production, the terms and methods used by manuscript historians to describe the book, and key themes in early book history. Where were manuscripts made and who made them? What kinds of materials were used and what can those materials tell us? What kinds of texts were created and copied during these centuries? How did multilingualism matter in the medieval period? In pursuing these questions, you will study some ...

Where were manuscripts made and who made them? What kinds of materials were used and what can those materials tell us? What kinds of texts were created and copied during these centuries? How did multilingualism matter in the medieval period? In pursuing these questions, you will study some of the most significant and beautiful books held by the university libraries of Cambridge and Stanford.

Digging Deeper is a six-week course, with each week featuring filmed sequences of experts with manuscripts, reading assignments, a short transcription, and self-testing quizzes. Assignments will help you develop a basic knowledge of how to access manuscripts in person and online, skills in codicology (the study of the medieval book and the physical make-up of manuscripts), palaeography (the describing and analysis of medieval scripts), and transcription (the reading and interpretation of writing in manuscripts). Participants who finish the course will earn a Stanford Statement of Accomplishment.

Digging Deeper: Making Manuscripts will be followed in Spring with a course focusing on the interpretation and preservation of manuscripts in the digital era.

Really well organized and well presented course, especially by Ms Treharne. I thought it would be a generic dusting on the topic, but instead I felt like I learned a lot. Really made me want to dig deeper into the topic!

It was difficult for me because I don't have previous experience and I'm not well versed in english, I tried to do my best but I didn't accomplish all the goals, but I really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward for the next part. Thank you very much.

This was a good course covering the basics of medieval manuscripts from making parchment all the way to gilding and illumination, and including a good dose of practical palaeography. Lots of links to resources, and good practical exercises looking at manuscripts and their histories. I suspect those with no prior knowledge might have needed a little extra help on the palaeography side, though.

I completed this course and found it informative and interesting. I really loved the palaeography exercises and found this a very useful tool. I would recommend this course to anyone interested in discovering the rich digital world of manuscripts. However, before you start be warned that this course is addictive! Have fun!

Excellent introduction to the study of medieval manuscripts: how they were made, different kinds of handwriting used, genres, etc. Well-chosen examples and additional materials such as a bibliography and links to online resources.

This was a very interesting and informative class. It opened my eyes to a lot of the hidden gems located in manuscripts. The teachers were excellentgoing over the information. I also liked that the words were scrolling down the right hand side of the video. You could tell the enthusiasm the teachers had for the subject. The hardest part was trying to translate the manuscripts.

Unfortunately, with a grizz of a semester bearing down upon me I had to flee from the course rather early, but what I was able to see was most ILLUMINATING. I thoroughly enjoy the concatenation of mediums--vellum/digital, and I hope this interaction is offered again so I can DIG DEEPER. Niels Herold

This course is excellent for the novice manuscript enthusiast. It answers a lot of questions about medieval books, their structure, the paleography and codexology in terms and steps which are well-presented and easy to follow. The external reading and links provided in the course are extremely beneficial.

This course is brilliant! Especially I'd like to emphasize practical paleontology sections and practicums, devoted to different aspects of working with medieval manuscripts. I look forward to Digging Deeper - 2!
