I am a huge fan of Don and his way of teaching and this class didn't let me down. It covers the fundamentals of portrait photography very well and goes beyond that so even if you are a trained photographer there are several good bits and pieces to pick up as well.

Don has crammed a full course on photography, seeing managing and controlling light, working with models and lighting fundamentals into this course. In addition he demonstrates how to use very basic and low cost equipment and achieve professional results. On the side he teaches post processing in lightroom and photo shop. This is one heck of a lot of info. Thanks Another Don Don Hickey

Don is a great teacher. He can explain complex concepts in a very easy way. You'll find good 'ol down-to-earth photography, zero "rockstar" non-sense. I finally was able to understand how to use my speedlights well. After putting in practice what I learned, I got perfect exposure 100% of the times, both indoors and outdoors. Best investment ever in my education!

Don shows how to do a portrait from start to finish and includes his own style to show how you can make the shot "yours". There is a lot of material here and it definitely takes more than one "go" to take it all in. His final shots are beautiful and if you can emulate him you'll be doing well.

Don presents the information in a straightforward, easy to understand manner, without a lot of jargon. Remember that photography is a hands-on endeavor, so take each segment or section and go out and try it yourself. You will be surprised at what you can do by the end.

It's not often that you can go out on a shoot with a pro photographer and listen to his thought processes as he constructs a photograph, but this is what you get in "Portrait Photography with Simple Gear". Don has a great, relaxed style in front of the camera and this is about as close to being there as you'll get without actually flying to Phoenix. I signed up some time ago and I've noticed that periodically Don adds webinars and new video lessons, which makes this course outstanding value at $50.

Don is so giving with his time and experience. He teaches (this course and in all his teaching) in a layed-back, non-threatening way, which is easy to understand. Don is very approachable. If you have any questions what-so-ever, he will be glad to answer them for you. This course teaches all the necessary basics of lighting and then some. You can practice along with these lessons. You can pause the lessons and return to one's that you'd like to revisit. What's nice is you set your own pace. It's the only way to learn!

All of the courses presented by Don Giannatti are very INFORMATIVE! His intent is to express the very elements required to take and make an amazing shot! I would say that the best way to evaluate the information is to go out and shoot. I did and it was AMAZING how I could recall some of the course material which resulted in a better photograph. This is the best money I've spend on photography training and I look forward to registering for all of his course offerings on UDEMY!

Don's straight forward approach to photography and lighting is refreshing. You listen to his thought process on every shot in this course and get a good understanding of what it takes to MAKE a photograph. From learning how to make your own Rope Meter (very useful) to using natural light, reflectors, etc.to post processing and how Don uses Photoshop and Lightroom...it's all in this course! Buy this course, watch it and practice, practice, practice!

With my crazy work schedule it's very difficult to do "mainstream" classes, workshops and even on line training that's scheduled when I am unavailable. With Don's course on Udemy, I have been able to watch the videos and read the material on my own schedule, and THAT makes it very convenient! On top of that, I have been a Huge Fan of Don's work and teachings since I first discovered him on Flickr some years ago. I attended an early version of his Lighting Essentials workshops back in 2007 and still to this day use techniques I learned that day. I can't stress enough how much knowledge of photography and post production Don has, and just as importantly is willing to share with others! If you are wondering if this course is something you want do, take my word that you will get FAR MORE information about photography than you thought you would when you let Don teach you what you need to know to take and make better images! I'm thoroughly enjoying this course and my photography has improved dramatically. Don has added additional course material, answered questions and made constructive comments via the flickr site - I'm certain to enrol on his natural light course next. Mandy www.amandaherbert.com

Great teaching style, I'm from the UK and think he's one of the most down to earth tutors out there. First saw Don on Creative Live, go and get his courses form there as well, well worth it. He's a tutor that shows you how to create great looking photos with minimal outlay. Want to learn about how light works? watch Don's courses. Not only that he answers questions in a manor which is clear and easy to understand.

I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn how to use simple, inexpensive gear to create better portraits. Don explains - in an easy to understand manner - not only how to light a subject, but, more importantly, why to light a subject a certain way, to create the image you want. As a bonus, Don goes through his post processing, step by step, to show how a few simple adjustments can make a great image even better.

I've taken multiple classes from Don and he has never let me down. I think I'm addicted to his classes and his style. He has opened my eyes to reflection, and I can't thank him enough. I see in the announcements that he is working on another class and I can't wait to hear that it is ready.

Thanks Don for this great course. I am a semi-professional photographer, mainly stills and lanscapes. These lectures on lighting techniques and flash intergration are great. All the information is realitive and well presented. I am really learing quite a bit of new information on your course. I like the way you keep reinforcing the information, i.e. the skin reflects the light! bright building = bright reflection and black table = dull reflection. Have purchased some new equipment after seeing you using it. Will really enjoy playing with it when it arrives. Cheers, Stefan

Don covers everything to get started in portrait photography. Natural light and artificial light is all covered, with a great insight into the term Don coined, Subject Centric Lighting". As an added bonus, Don also steps you through his basic workflow in editing his portraits within Photoshop, to really help images pop. He is also a great mentor, answering all questions thrown at him, both here and in his Flickr group he started for course participants. Well done Don, and I look forward to seeing more improvements in my own photography as I progress more through the course.
