The University of Tokyo online courses and MOOCs - student reviews
The University of Tokyo, (東京大学) , is a world-class center for research and ranks No. 1 in Asia, according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2013. Among its 12 research centers is the Earthquake Research Institute, which employs more than 80 top-notch professors, research associates and graduate students who conduct field observations, experiments, theoretical studies and computer simulations of seismic and volcanic activity around the globe. Besides working to understand the science underlying earthquakes and volcanoes, the institute aims to improve earthquake forecasting and advance mitigation of disasters that occur as a result of these phenomena. The university itself suffered damage during an earthquake in 1923; the fires that followed it destroyed 700,000 volumes of the Imperial University library. Established in 1877, the university now enrolls learners from more than 100 countries. It recently added two unique interdisciplinary curricula taught entirely in English and geared toward international students: the International Program on Japan in East Asia and the International Program in Environmental Sciences. The university also recently launched OpenCourseWare as part of a program to “open the gates of knowledge.” You can join thousands of learners by enrolling in the university’s free online classes to access lectures and videos in all major disciplines.
